Bass tabs or Tabulature is a written form of musical notation, which tells players where to place their fingers on a bass guitar rather than which pitches to play.
Tablature is mostly, but not only, seen for fretted stringed instruments, in which context it is usually called tab or tabs for short. It is frequently used, as seen here on fretplay.com for bass tabs.
The word tab or tablature comes from the Latin word tabulatura. Tabula is a slate or table. To tabulate something means to put it into a chart or table.
Bass tabs consists of four horizontal lines forming a staff (or stave) similar to standard notation. Each line represents one of the instrument's strings so standard bass tabs has four lines, some five or six but they are rare.

The numbers on the bass tabs lines represent the fret used to obtain the desired pitch. For example, the number five written on the top line indicates that the player should press down at the fift fret on the highest string.
