On the lighter side Its a little more mellow compared to 311's later stuff. This album isn't what I expected, but this was not a bad thing. It has things combo of rock with a jazzy sound which I really dig. I would definitely recommend this album.
Best 311 Ever?
This is the original, harder sound of 311 that I really miss, although still a good band now. This is the CD that introduced me to 311 in 1997, and ever since then they've been one of my favorite bands. Buy this, pop it in, and listen to the whole thing all the way through - you won't be disappointed. .
Their first was their best!
It never seems to get old. 311's "Music" has stayed in my CD changer for nearly 14 years. This is going to offend some hardcore 311 fans, but I've always had the impression that all of 311's albums after "Music" sounded like failed attempts to recreate the magic of "Music". If you only own one 311 album, it needs to be this one.
Welcome to the groove, you can move, right?
This period ended when the band moved to L. PROTO-311: THE OMAHA YEARS, 1990-1992
311, from Omaha, Nebraska, self-released three studio EPs entitled Dammit! (1990), Unity (1991) and Hydroponic (1992, created as a demo tape). A. and won a record contract in 1992.
THE TRILOGY OF DEBUT ALBUMS, 1993-1996
Music (1993)
Debut Trilogy Part 1: An original, energetic, raw, explosive fusion of rock, hip hop, funk, reggae and rap. About two-thirds of the songs are re-worked versions of the band's best songs from the Omaha years. The other third are butt-kicking new songs made just for this release. This album says, "This is what we can do. "
Grassroots (1994)
Debut Trilogy Part 2: An exploration of their roots, a musical journey of growing up from the ground up. This album says, "This is where we came from. "
311, "self-titled" or "the blue album" (1995)
Debut Trilogy Part 3: A crisp, tight, bold, definitive, well-oiled machine. This album says, "This is what we are. "
These first three LPs are all tied for my favorite 311 album, and I admit my hard-hitting rap-rock bias. :-).
The hardest, rocking debut in alternative history
Best of all, it never let's up a groove, and it just rocks the whole way. Music is the hardest, most energetic 311 album ever. There's plenty of variety in this one as well, this is what From Chaos should have been (kidding! From Chaos is different from Music, and that's the way I like it). This is their first album, and it's just that. This one is a little bit harder to describe because it's not as stylistic as any other 311 album. But it still is essential to a 311 fan's collection, because this is super awesome stuff.
You'll find no songs like Down, this is aggressive. Songs like Freak Out with it's funky riff and hard riffs and Visit with it's skaish chorus will rock you like a _________. The jazzy My Stoney Baby stands out for being just that, a jazzy funky tune. Paradise is the most beautiful piece of reggae style song you'll ever hear, next to Lose and 1,2,3. Welcome just stands out as an excellent opener, arguably the best opener. Plain is just ultra funky. All the songs just stand out for something, and this one just rocks your brain out. Even Paradise has some rimshots and effects that make you hit yourself. And check out the all electronic drums in Freak Out. Music hits and _________ hits you with little things that make Music a classic. And it's all blended and balanced in to the killer twelve songs.
Other stand outs are Feels So Good ("P-Nut, beat that thang!"), Do You right (with it's carribean chorus), and Nix Hex (with it's irrestistable Coda). Overall though, an amazing debut from the masters of, well ____, that's the beauty (if you know what I mean)!.
