Primordial 311
Possessing an innate musicality and original style, Omaha Sessions is raw and revelatory of a band that would go on to be a huge underground and later mainstream success with a host of platinum and gold albums. This was 311's first album, funded and recorded by the band during their years in Omaha, Nebraska, at a time when hair bands were popular. Songs such as "Slinky" and "Summer of Love" are favorites even today and are requested by fans at live shows. For Diehard 311 fans it is a must own; others would not find it that appealing.

Not Worth It
They aren't that great. You know, there might be reasons why these songs aren't really played that much anymore. 311 is my favorite band, but hey, they aren't geniuses. Despite having a near perfect five album run (and a perfect four album run, can't say that for any other bands), not everything they do is genius (come on, that one is too easy to figure out. No bands are perfect). This is easily their worst material, ever, but I think even 311 could agree that some of the stuff on here isn't that great.

So why is this not worth buying? Well, a lot of the guitar riffs are not catchy. They are very muddy and sound as good as slamming the same dull boring chords (witness that second part of Soul Sucker). There are some good riffs, some good stuff, but a lot of this stuff is bland and has been done way better, with more thought, creativity, well you name it.

It's mostly Nick rapping, and boy god, does he not sound that great. He sounds like a wigger. Now, most 311 haters probably write off Nick Hexum
as a wigger anyway, but I truly think he white boy rapping on this is terrible. Hardly any songs are must listens, but the only ones I can think of are Slinky and Summer Of Love.

I must give 311 credit for making this stuff, I don't mind that it exists on tape. But hey, I'm honest about my music, and even 311 don't get a pass being my favorite band. You might like it more than me, but I would give it a pass, really. The songs that I like are avaible on legal listening sites and get old quick, (then I go back, listen a bit, then get sick of it, and then it gets over), and the rest of the songs aren't even worth repeated listens. Check it out, but don't set you standards high. Don't do it!

4/10.

PROTO-311: THE OMAHA YEARS, 1990-1992

311, from Omaha, Nebraska, self-released three studio EPs entitled Dammit! (1990), Unity (1991) and Hydroponic (1992, created as a demo tape). 311's originally stated goal as a band was "to take rap and make it musical. This period ended when the band moved to L. A. and won a record contract in 1992. See 1993 and 1998 for the releases of music from this era. . .

THE TRILOGY OF DEBUT ALBUMS, 1993-1996

Music (1993)
Debut Trilogy Part 1: An original, energetic, raw, explosive fusion of rock, hip hop, funk, reggae and rap. About two-thirds of the songs are re-worked versions of the band's best songs from the Omaha years. The other third are butt-kicking new songs made just for this release. This album says, "This is what we can do. "

Grassroots (1994)
Debut Trilogy Part 2: An exploration of their roots, a musical journey of growing up from the ground up. This album says, "This is where we came from. "

311, "self-titled" or "the blue album" (1995)
Debut Trilogy Part 3: A crisp, tight, bold, definitive, well-oiled machine. This album says, "This is what we are. "

Enlarged to Show Detail (1996)
A "behind the scenes" DVD Epilogue to the Debut Trilogy containing interviews, music videos, concert footage, etc. - with a bonus EP of outtakes from 1995

Omaha Sessions 1988-1991 (1998)
A compilation of 311's early songs (from 311's self-released EPs) that were not later re-made for the band's premier debut LP in 1993 (above). BTW, this CD is not bad if you like old school 311, but despite some of the songs being re-mixed, it still comes off like a demo or low-budget outtakes collection.
