One of the top albums this decade Firecracker, Answering Bell, When Stars Go Blue, Somehow Someday are just a handful of the gems you'll find on Gold. Right from it's opening track New York, New York, Gold grabs you and never lets you go with some of the best songs I've listened to in a long time. For some reason still relatively unknown in these parts, Ryan Adams may be the best contempory American musician/songwriter since Bob Dylan. And although for some strange reason too long for some Amazon. com critic's, throw Gold in, kickback, relax and enjoy! .
The bonus disc is well worht the admission price
The bonus cd only adds to enjoyment. This cd is proof that Adam's is a great songwriter. Well-worth looking for.
Gold
It certainly was the one that put him on the map. Ryan Adams-Gold *****
Gold just might be his best album. Before Gold he had a slight following leftover from his days in Whiskeytown, and the few solo albums he had released previous to Gold, but this really introduced him to the mainstream and that is mostly due to the semi-hit single 'New York, New York. ' The video for the song was actually played on MTV which was the first and only time that ever happened for him.
The success of the album led to Adams recording albums at a break-neck pace, all of which being good but not always being the solid albums they could be because of the little amount of time spent on recording. 'New York New York' the lovely plead of 'Firecracker' and 'Somehow, someday' are classic Adams. The melancholy 'Nobody Girl' and the now T-mobile theme song 'Gonna Make You Love Me' were a different side of Adams not shown before but were a pleasant welcome.
For Ryan Adams, Gold is as good as it gets, though I must say he is one artist who should be explored in full. All his material should be explored. Gold, alongside his other album Easy Tiger are among the best albums to be released since 2000. Highly Recommended.
Adams' Greatest Work Yet
It showcases his ability to write and perform a wide variety of music. This is perhaps Ryan Adams' greatest album so far. Some reviewers here say that "New York, New York" and "Firecracker" are great, but then he "loses focus. " They obviously expected the entire album to be rocking and upbeat. With Ryan Adams, that is a mistake. Some of the best tracks on here are the slow ones. The best thing about this album is that there are songs on it for every kind of mood.
Total Brilliance....
When I first heard this cd I could hardly believe how brilliant it was. I've waited a few years before saying this, but am now pretty sure that this album is my all time favourite from any artist. . . I just kept on playing it. . . and I've never gotten sick of it. Although this cd should come with a warning for people new to Ryan Adams music: IF YOU BUY THIS, YOU'll END UP BUYING EVERYTHING HE'S EVER RECORDED, INCLUDING WITH WHISKEYTOWN. That's alot of cd's! But well worth it. . . 2005 was an expensive year to be a Ryan Adam fan (with three releases). I feel "privileged" to be the owner of no. 995 of 1,000 of the colored vinyl Gold promo record - even if it cost me nearly $400. 00 on eBay (haha, see what I mean). One day Ryan will top this album, some say Heartbreaker is his best so far (his first solo album). I prefer Gold just a bit more - but I'm just waiting for a better album (or equal) to this from Ryan. I'm sure he can do it - he almost achieved it with Easy Tiger. In the meantime though, thank you Winona Ryder!!! Without you, this album may never have existed - wow, I wonder how she must feel being the muse to this incredible masterwork. I wouldn't claim that Ryan (David) Adams is a genius. . . but I know that he's a musical genius, the proof is in listening to this. .
