They sold their souls for rock and roll, except this one doesn't really rock
He wants it to sound more like Honkin' on Bobo and less like "Just Push Play. In the April 30th 2009 issue of Rolling Stone, Joe Perry discusses the new Aerosmith album planned for 2010. "

Quoting Joe: "That one brought us back down to earth after putting out records like "Just Push Play. " I listen to that record, and I'm not sure that it's my band. "

You're not alone, Joe. And Joe's words tell you pretty much anything you need to know about this album. If Aerosmith could step into a time machine and go back to the time immediately preceding their recording of this turkey and cancel the sessions, they'd be a better band and the world of music would be better for it.

Good luck with the new album, Joe. At least you can see where you jumped the shark. .


Was anybody pushing?
However, that slide hit a nadir with "Just Push Play," which proved that Steven Tyler and Joe Perry had finally become the 70's answer to the 60's Rolling Stones. Aerosmith had made their long descent into corporation rock mediocrity somewhere after Pump and Permanent Vacation put them back on the radio and MTV. If Rocks = Sticky Fingers and Get a Grip = Some Girls, then "Just Push Play" = Voodoo Lounge. Competent, a couple really hot songs that make it to classic rock radio, a primer for a mega-tour, then forgotten until the next "This is the REAL comeback album" makes its appearance.

The two killer cuts were the sassy title track and the radio ready "Jaded," a hooky middle of the road pop tune. The CD's namesake got used as a truck commercial, which is kind of depressing, because Aerosmith at their 70's dirtiest would have never been considered a safe enough group to hawk an F-150. In fact, there's nothing on "Just Push Play" that sounds remotely threatening. . . or relevant. "Avant Garden" messes with the formula a bit and "Trip Hopping" gets its Beatles Psychedelia on, but everything else on "Just Push Play" sounds like a jingles band doing a sunny imitation of late 70's rock. Honkin' on Bobo was an attempt to rediscover their roots, and there are rumours of a new album for 2009, but my guess is we'll be hearing Aerosmith's version of A Bigger Bang when that CD appears.


Just say No
Did these guys have toys in the attic or what? I'll give them credit for a couple of good tunes on here but they sure don't rock like they used to. This is where a lot of Aerosmith fans had to draw the line. I think Joe Perry must have been in the bathroom when they recorded this. If you want to understand why this cd frustrates me so just go back and listen to "Rocks". .
