He May Be Vulgar, But He's Certainly Talented Now in the US that may not seem like a big deal but in the UK it's certainly one of the biggest shock number 1 entries. When Afroman first entered onto the worlds stage, he achieved something nobody expected, he reached number 1 in the UK singles charts with a song that basically glorified marijuana smoking. Now personally I loved the song, it was catchy, fun, and in some ways light hearted. The lyrics may not be the best for our children, but that's actually what makes Afroman more appealing. He doesn't fill his entire album with hateful lyrics and general crapiness, he's someone who doesn't seem to worry about the simple stuff, he just wants to have a good time and if it means getting stoned all the time then so be it.
His lyrics are at times utterly vulgar and in other points extremely chauvinistic, but again that's what make him appealing. Easily the best song on the whole album is Crazy Rap as it's simply the most catchy thing you're ever likely to listen to. One of the most surprising things about it is that here in the UK, regardless of the lyrical content, he was allowed a release and although it wasn't as big a success in the charts as his previous winner, it certainly gained a lot of airplay. Afroman gives you the impression that he's a man who just wants to have fun with his music, he isn't one to be taken seriously and that makes me want more of him, which makes me recommend this album.
My top 5 are
Crazy Rap
Hush
Tumbleweed
Because I God High
She Wont Let Me ****.
Afroman is what rap needs (don't get teh clean version!)
It is my favorite rap album I own. Afroman's "The Good Times" is a fun and talented album. Along with Eminem and a couple other smaller rap artists (Blackalicious) Afroman brings in a new energy and musical talent into the rap community. His songs are just so damn catchy and good. The songs aren't just simplistic bass beats and drum riffs, but area actually musical. Then, his lyrics are just hilarious, with great rhymes. From his parody in Colt 45 of "Rapper's Delight" to all of the other funny sexual content and drug jokes he has, it makes you laugh after numerous times hearing it.
I think it was kind of proper that he did a song for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back because lots of Afroman's humor is like the "low brow" aspect of Kevin Smith's humor. It is obviously written by someone who finds sex and drugs immaturely funny, but in a way, it is also making fun of sex and drug humor. And, for those of you who have heard "Because I got High" from Jay and Silent Bob, musically speaking, none of his other songs are like that one. They are usually faster and somewhat mor emelodic, and his rapping is like another percussion instrument in the song. However, content wise, the lyrics are very similar. But, I repaet, the clean version would [stink], you won't hear most of it.
