not their best but classicbottom line good old school hardcore punk and you can tell it's AF not like the next two releases this has heart and energy. not the best AF cd but it has many redeeming traits.
Agnostic Front - 'Something's Gotta Give' (Epitaph)
In other words,it's above average for WHAT it is. I'm giving this CD a four star rating because for a live effort from this long-running New York City-style thrashcore/punk band,it's darn good. I did get to see Agnostic Front on this very tour,in fact I believe the setlist ran pretty much the same as this disc's track listing. Only downside was,EVEN the live performance ran a short 35 minutes. Guess that must be standard for bands as such. The tracks that I do remember kicking some serious ass were the title cut "Something's Gotta Give","No Fear",the crowd surfing "Do Or Die","Bloodsucker" and "Today,Tomorrow,Forever". Line-up:Roger Miret-vocals,Vinnie Stigma-guitar,Rob Kabula-bass and Jim Colletti-drums. Should appeal to most fans of M. O. D. ,Sick Of It All,G. B. H. ,Cro-Mags and Murphy's Law.
Not the Most Hardcore Thing You'll Ever Hear...
But for fans of early Agnostic Front (Liberty and Justice For. For fans of other Epitaph bands like Pennywise and Nofx, and whatever other poppy crap is trying to be passed off as Hardcore, this album might sound pretty tough. . . , One Voice, etc. . . ) then this album seems kinda limp. A good effort by the boys at making a comeback, and kicking it old school style while trying not to sound like its still 1985, because of course, it ain't. You have to remember, the band broke up in 1993, and decided that they loved hardcore too much to end it completely. I would have prefered if the A. F. boys had gotten together under a new name, but I guess this is their way of preserving their legacy with the new generation of Hardcore youth. Its not bad, a helluva lot better than a knife to the liver, but get this AFTER you've heard their early stuff.
Standard
Where's the fierceness? Where's the fire? The high-point of this is an excellent version of "Crucified. This album is weak compared to their earlier work. " Other than that. . . . it's not so hot.
I'm not a skin head, but AF sure does kick!!!
Fast, hard, and more importantly: Not sound like they were recorded in a garage with a $2 recording system. This is how all Agnostic Front records should be. Despite what all the skin heads say, I think Agnostic Front coming to Epitaph was the wisest career choice they ever made. I mean listen to the sound quality of some of their older albums. Not to mention if they hadn't of came to Epitaph, then I wouldn't know about them and probably wouldn't be looking into various non-Epitaph hardcore bands.
I currently have 4 Agnostic Front releases: their 3 epitaph ones and Raw Unleashed. This is definitely the best one I own. I had originally thought that Dead Yuppies was the best. But then I head sound clips to the digitally enhanced "One Voice" and was blown away. Now, I have this CD and it is way better than "Dead Yuppies" as well. Also, something else that shocked and impressed me about this album is how NOT repetitive it is. I had the idea that AF = totally repetitive. However, that isn't true at all with this album!!! This is honestly no more repetitive than a Vision album is.
The song "Gotta Go" really stands out. I wouldn't necessarily say that it's the best but it is certainly one of them. It's amazing that hardcore band Agnostic Front can create a pure punk song and still sound awesome! Another song that really stands out is "Pauly The Dog". My mouth dropped to the floor when I heard this song. Every time I hear it I always have to make sure that it is really Agnostic Front I am listening to and not a NOFX song! It is an acoustic song with no redeeming lyrics. However, it's still quite funny. It is about how he has a dog who always drinks up all his beer. Pretty NOFX sounding huh? However, the rest of the songs are clearly hardcore songs. Other great songs include: "Bloodsucker", "Something's Gotta Give", "The Blame", and "Before My Eyes".
