I had a hard time figuring out this e.p.
That's the way it is on all these songs, and it's not a bad thing. I remember the first night I heard "No Excuses" I was delivering a pizza, and I couldn't figure out at first if it was electric, or acoustic because the production is that stripped down. I at first thought it was done up in the same fashion as "SAP" was in 92, but then when I heard the guitar solo on "No Excuses" I knew it was electric; it was just missing the grunge. Not saying that Alice left the grunge scene behind them the first song on here "Rotten Apple" is still rather grungy, and so is "Nutshell". "I Stay Away's" video should've won for best video of the year in 94 as it looked like one of those claymation puppets that Rankin/Bass are responsible for exposing to the world. "I Stay Away" is probably the most adventurous the group ever got as they incorporated a string section into the song which makes it "Classic Rock". However, the best is saved for last as the group takes on jazz with "Swing On This". I don't know why this was released unless it was a tie over until Layne Staley got out of rehab for battling the heroin demon, or if this was planned, but regardless it made it to number 1 on the album charts making Alice In Chains one of the big groups of grunge. This would cement them as the third most important group in Seattle's music heritage(mind you Soundgarden and Pearl Jam will always be numbers 1 and 2). Unfortunately, grunge would die out on April 8th, 1994 as Kurt Cobain would die, so this is a peer into the future of grunge, and still retaining the edge. It's definitely worth a check out. .

the cats pajamas... oh yea, im serious.
you cannot dismiss the power of layne's voice. truly great. he just sounds so tormented. imagine a person who has been tortured for days whithout making a peep, and then suddenly lets out one hellacious scream. if anyone can hold a candle to chris cornell, its layne staley. and like cornell, as hard as he pushes it, its like focused chaos. cantrell provides perfect harmonization with layne, not to mention the great cord progression. one part of this album that gets me every time is when Dont Follow kicks off with the harmonica solo. its as spellbinding as a harmonica is capable of, and then layne hits the gas on his twin turbo vocal cords. there are only about 10 songs i know of that give me chills as if i was touched by an angel, and this is one of them. yea corny i know. even my beautiful words cant describe this album. ha, i just topped myself. enjoy at full volume. by the way, exit music (for a movie) by radiohead. wowzers. i get chills just thinking about that one. even pink floyd couldnt take you as far away. ok, im done .

Enjoy this CD
Still like purchasing hard CD's. Good CD, came in perfect condition at a great price. I enjoy the covers and reading through the pamplet rather than taking chances on my laptop to download a virus. Good CD with Great songs!.

Buy it for the sleepers
" These are two amazing, albeit depressing, songs. While "I Stay Away", "No Excuses", and "Don't Follow" are great songs that got lots of air-play, I really purchased this disc for "Nutshell" and "Rotten Apples. The instrumental and vocal sound on these is incredible. This disc is a must-have for anyone who appreciates AIC.

Pleased and informed customer
However, you must love the musical stylings of Alice in Chains to enjoy. This cd is truly amazing. The product was exactly what I was looking for, and who would have thought there were still original collector items from early 90's that were unopened. Truly happy with the purchase!.
