Awesome album, Up in the Attic out in July There are very few weak spots on this album, if any. I bought this album on pretty much a whim a few weeks after it came out in 2003, and it seriously hasn't gotten old since. I have close to 4,000 songs in iTunes and "Quiet" has been towards the top of my play count for a long time. The singles, "These Days" and "Glow" stick very easily. 1000 Days, Never Meant, Tia Lupe and Hope are also very good. The cd is a good balance between hard and soft and I like that they've done some different things with this album than they did with their first.
I originally didn't care too much for the debut album aside from Movies, Stranded and Attitudes, but Truant inspired me to go back and take another listen and I actually like the first album much better now that I've gone back. I've heard a sneak peak of some of the songs for the album coming out in July and I have a feeling its going to be excellent. Give these guys a chance, I'm sure you'll find something you like.
What Happened?
Fortunately, I wasn't exposed to the "overhype" of the Smooth Crminal single, and I just fell in love with every song on the group's first major record. ANThology is one of my all time favourites American rock albums. I bought truANT hoping to relive the sheer brilliance of its predecessor, however I was drastically let down. Now truANT is not a bad album at all. I describe it as being more listener-friendly. What's missing though is the great lyrics and insane music. The lead vocalist pulled a Fred Durst and screamed/sang in one of the songs. I didn't think that was necessary seing as ANThology didn't have any of that and was still rocking ie both albums are vastly different. What I'm saying is: if you really like ANThology, stay away from truANT and if you hated ANThology, you should try truANT. .
Average Let Down
Was I wrong. I bought the album truANT thinking that it would be as great as ANThology. The lyrics were absolutely ridiculous!
'We'll take a trip for. . around the world', 'I'll be the bumblebee behind you, baby' and 'I'll think of something positive and negative too'? What was that? That made no sense, and if it does to anyone out there, good for you. Alien Ant Farm went to pop, and badly too. What happened to this album?!.
Just Great!
Here's how I rate the songs:
1000 Days- 10/10 Great song. Just as good as the first album. Nice and dark-ish, just how I like it!
Drifting part- 9/10- Gets a little old after awhile, but it's still good.
Quiet- 10/10 This one is a great great great song! The chorus (spelling?) is just plain AWESOME! I love it.
Glow- 9/10 Used to be one of my faves, then I played it too much. Oh well.
These Days- 10/10 Catchy. Ver very very catchy. Its good though!
Sarah Wynn- 8/10 A song talking about a girl doing heroin. Not the greatest, but, (unusually for AAF) the lyrics ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE!!!!
Never Meant- 7/10 It's okay . . . Some people compare it to Orange Appeal. Nowhere near as good as Orange Appeal. But hey, at least it makes more sense than Orange Appeal!
Goodbye- 8/10 Its good, but I usually skip it to go to something more, umm, "exciting".
Tia Lupe- 10/10 This is a GOOD song, nice hispanic flair. Gotta listen to it a few times to actually get it, though.
Rubber Mallet- 9/10 This one's pretty good. Cable cars and North and Valentine must be special to them (Remeber Happy Death Day?) Oh well, can't expect much sense to come from them. And yet people say that they're a "clean group". Sure.
S. S. Recognize- 10/10 This song is GREAT. It sounds like the longest one, even though Tia Lupe is. Don't really know what its about, but, its still good! But the lyrics weren't in the booklet!!! AAH! Fortunately I found them on the Internet, so I'm saved!
Hope- 7/10 It's okay. Too slow.
One Of My Favorite CDs
I bought "ANTthology" When I firest heard Movies on MTV, the original video. One Of My Favorite CDs, by Far. I really liked the Album, and then I Heard AAF had a new Album out, so I bought it. And Months and Months later, I'm here to tell you about it. I bought it without even hearing a song off of it, not even "These Days", the first single.
The Hard Songs, are alot harder in comparison to ANThology. And The Slower songs are alot slower when compared to ANThology. Make Sense? I Thought So.
1000 Days -9/10- Some people compare it to Courage from the last album, and I can see the resemblance in like, the first three seconds of the Song, but otherwise I see nothing similiar. I heard this song. I thought "Wow, this will be my favorite song off this album". And then I Hit Track Two.
Drifting Apart -9/10- It Seems like Dryden accidently left a word out of the very first few seconds of the song "We'll take a trip for. . . " For what, Dryden? It irratated me. The Booklet said "We'll take a trip for two". . . but he never sings TWO. And it freaking pisses me off. So It gets a nine for the anger of missing out on that word. Haha, silly, I know. But Im rough even on bands I do like.
Quiet -6/10- I dont really know what they were going for, I didnt really care for it. I know AAF doesnt have the most understandable and comphrehendable lyrics, but these lyrics just really confused me and took the joy out of the song. The Music is Decent enough, and his Vocal Range is nice in this song, but the Words just make you wonder if he gave the pen to a Drunk Hymalayan Lumberjack. I didnt understand it. Skip this Track.
Glow -9/10- Very interesting way this song is done. Full of Double Entendres and Innuendos, its kinda goofy the first time you hear it and realize what he's saying. But the perverse little child-like giggles soon progress to actually understand the song, and it becomes meaningfull. Accoustic Works Nicely with the drummer's style, I liked it alot.
These Days -6/10- By Far the worst song on the Album. I cant believe this was the Single when I Heard it on the Radio. I actually skip this Track. Not worth going on talking about.
Sarah Wynn -8/10- Even if Sarah is a fictional person, which she may be, it's still a good song. Im sure some people could apply the Lyrics to their own life, but the Music is phenomenal on this Track, give a good hear and it may become your favorite track on the CD.
Never Meant -8/10- Remember Orange Appeal, the hidden track on the last album? Reminiscent of that song, very much so. The Lyrics kinda sucked in this one, but I dont really expect alot out of Dryden's work. But the song is very different from the rest on the album, and is a change of pace worth hearing.
Goodbye -8/10- "And Then Your Friends Will Say, That You Look Good Today. Goodbye! Goodbye!" Um, what message or feelings is Dryden trying to convey here? I dunno, but the Song is decent enough to listen to and not skip over.
Tia Lupe -8/10- Again, really odd lyrics, but I dont seem to mind it this time, because the music is really odd when compared to other AAF songs. The song is very slowly, very slowly, growing on me.
Rubber Mallet -10/10- YES! Very Metal-ish sounding here, and they pull it off very nicely. You'll hear some Lyrics similiar to their Last Album, like North and Valentine must truly mean something to the guys at AAF, or Dryden was running out of Meterial, but I dont mind, I really Enjoy this song.
S. S. Recognize -10/10- This song alone is worth buying the Album for. They should release this as a single. It was on their "Greatest Hits" Album that true fans cannot get. I want that Album, but at least I have a little piece of it on TruANT. Amazing Song through and through. Favorite Song on the entire album.
Hope -9/10- A Nice Ending To An Overall Good Album. The Lyrics are really powerfull "Someone I thought, was a friend to Me, has gone out and married my wife". This song is very emotional, and kinda touched me, believe it or not. Slow song, with nice Orchestral Work here.
Overall, Buy this album if you liked ANThology, and if you didnt like ANThology, you might wanna preview this before you buy, I dont know why you would if you DIDNT like ANThology. But even if you didnt like their last Album, you still might like this one. It's greatly different to the last one, and with the same Charm and Appeal as the last one. I reccomend it.
