Rockin' Horse!
The song that struck most at first was Rockin' Horse from the Hittin' the Note studio release. This is a great live release from the boys. Someone else noted the vocals are handled by Warren Haynes, but it's the energy and fresh, aggressive approach that make this a standout track. Maybe it also stands out because it's the first newer cut after they start off with three oldies but goodies. Anyway, it's definitely a breath of fresh air and it leads into another great newer cut Desdemona, which also rocks the house.

The style of Rockin' Horse seems a little more brash and loose than the typical Allman's tune, and the musicianship on this cut is unreal. Well done, boys! The rest of performances on this CD set are great too. It's just great to have some excellent newer material interspersed with the old standbys, makes the old seem new again!.

Excellent Album
Warren and Derek are awesome, as is the rest of the band. Very good album, with a lot of classic songs as well as some of their new(er) material. Greg's voice is still great as well.

This album really rocks and captures some of that same live feel that the Filmore East album had. Very enjoyable.

Don`t overlook this Allman Brothers Band classic!

There are 6 songs on the dvd that are on both the dvd and cd,but they are different mixes or performances. I did`nt pick this up when it was released because I had the Beacon Theatre 2003 dvd release. I would say approvimately 9 songs that grace the cds (One way out),are`nt on the Beacon Theatre 2003 release. . . . they are two different animals as they say.

Now after hearing the cds of the 2003 Beacon theatre (One way out),I realize I had been missing something.

Better late than never.

Allman's Rule!
Recorded at The Beacon in 2004 it features a great mix of old and new tunes. One Way Out is the best live disc from the Allman's since "Live at the Filmore East". The sound is fantastic!Buy it!!!!!.

(4.5 stars) VERY ENJOYABLE ! (not quite a classic, but very interesting and it has it's moments)
It's a 2-disc set that includes both ABB classics and songs from their latest album, Hittin' The Note. One Way Out (2004) is a live recording of the current Allman Brothers Band during their annual March run at New York City's Beacon Theater in 2003.

One of the nice features on this set is the mix:

Derek Trucks, left speaker / Warren Haynes, right speaker
Jaimoe, left speaker / Butch Trucks, right speaker

The liner notes explain the setup, and being able to clearly connect the sound to the musician definitely adds to the listening pleasure.

The band sounds great, but there are some disappointing moments. As usual, they open with Statesboro Blues, and Warren's slide guitar sounds somewhat sloppy (compared to Duane's pristine slide on At Fillmore East, anybody's would). They quickly redeem themselves with a very good Don't Keep Me Wonderin', where Derek's slide is awesome.

Gregg's vocals show some signs of wear on Midnight Rider, Old Before My Time, Desdemona, and by the time they get to Every Hungry Woman and High Cost Of Low Living, he sounds as if he's barely hanging on. Other than those songs, Gregg's golden throat is in fine shape.

Warren Haynes shows off his blues-singer instincts as he belts out Rockin' Horse and Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, which is one of the better songs here.

Instumental Illness, from Hittin' The Note, is the best song in the set, and clearly distinguishes The Allman Brothers Band as some of the best musicians in the world today. At over sixteen minutes, this is the new ABB's In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed. On this one, Derek plays some amazing slide guitar, bassist Oteil Burbridge shows off his considerable skills, and Warren's guitar solo is just fantastic! The song also includes a very good drum and percussion solo.

This new band plays with a more improvised, light, and jazzy style that's a little different from the intense and spirited blues-rock style of the original Allmans. The new sound is great, but some of the songs lose their punch and passion. Trouble No More and the funky, but too laid-back, Wasted Words are the most glaring examples of this.

On Desdemona, Warren and Derek show what they can really do, and Gregg plays a nice, jazzy piano solo. Come And Go Blues and Ain't Wasting Time No More sound as if the band is just going through the motions, and Gregg changes the lyrics in the latter, from "all the war freaks die off" to "all the terrorist die off".

They rediscover their blues-rock passion in very, very good versions of Dreams and Whipping Post to end the set.

There's nothing at all bad on this album and it really cooks in some places, but long-time fans like me are always going to. . .

you know. . .

compare any new Allman Brothers live album to. . .

you know. . .

AT FILLMORE EAST.

And after over thirty years, nothing really can compare. . .

Still.
