Tori Amos Band: Tori Amos
Title: Winter
Rating:
Release Date: 1992-11-25
Media: Audio CD

Tracks: 1: Winter 2: Pool 3: Take to the Sky 4: Sweet Dreams 5: Upside Down

"I dyed my hair red today..."
The Pool is a short and haunting ballad, Take to the Sky is coy and brilliant, Sweet Dreams is pure fun with perculiar lyrics, and Upside Down just gives me chills. Winter by Tori Amos contains some of her best b-sides. The song Winter is also a beautiful track taken from her debut album, Little Earthquakes. This is one b-side worth owning if you are a die-hard Tori fan. She rocks!.

little blue world
The others are definitive-era Tori. This CD single is worth every dime for Upside Down, alone.

Five Songs, One Album : A Classic
My favorite song off of "Little Earthquakes" was most definitely "Winter", and this is the best packaged CD single from Tori ever. This is what I consider Tori Amos' finest CD Single. Seriously.

It comes in a white fold-out pack, with hand-written lyrics to all the songs. Both of Tori's best B-Sides are here - "Take to The Sky" (with the infamous line "This house is like Russia"), and "Sweet Dreams" (with its amazing percussion and incredible chorus). Both B-Sides are very `poppy' in the best way possible, and they are beautifully offset by "The Pool", which is a dreamy ambient solo, all croons and swoons. I love that track.

The set ends with "Upside Down", one of her acclaimed B-sides. You know, listening to this in the 2000s is a strange experience indeed. We are no longer in the age of the CD-Single, but actually holding one (and holding this one, in particular), makes you miss the wonder of the genre. CD Singles were wonderful ways for artists to release songs they recorded during album sessions, but couldn't quite make the album cut. In this case, all the B-Sides here are superior enough to count as album tracks, and none of them are `filler'. Well, maybe `The Pool' is a tad meandering, but it's a classic nonetheless.

I remember when I got this in 2001 (yeah, it took me that long to buy this!), it introduced so many of my friends to the beauty of Tori Amos. If a 5-track CD can do that, you know that's a good thing. At the centerpiece of this record however, remains "Winter", the best song off of "Little Earthquakes", with its lingering melody, and poignant, stark lyricism. The sheer timelessness of the song is a glory to behold.

The best CD-Single ever released. Just buy it and see for yourself. It makes sense to do so, even in this digital age.

Five Stars. Tori's best single release.

For Tori fans...
This single is worth buying!! Tori regularly plays most of these b-sides live when she's touring, you DO NOT want to miss out! Upside Down and Take to the Sky are wonderful, and the hauntiing "The Pool" is unlike anything you've ever heard.

Awesome Single
WINTER - First off I must say that this is my all time favorite Tori Amos song. Breakdown:

1. It's so heart breakingly beautiful. The lyrics to this song are extremely relative and heartfelt. I especially love the lyrics, "all the white horses". Their symbolism can mean what they mean to you personally. It's very open. The piano combined with the string sections is magical and Ms. Amos' voice really compliments the mood of this song. Pure genius. 5/5

2. THE POOL - This song is very ethereal, seems like it would have fit well on "To Venus And Back" with its vast musical landscape. It is definitely not a song to sing along to, but to admire the artistic value. 4/5

3. TAKE TO THE SKY - This song, left off of Ms. Amos' debut album, "Little Earthquakes", is an especially catchy tune, most notably the chorus. I love the line, "I dyed my hair red today". There is a very awkward bridge in this song, but overall a very good song. 4/5

4. SWEET DREAMS - Also left off of "Little Earthquakes", this is an awesome, politically driven song. The lyrics are very quick and feisty. I love it when Ms. Amos has something powerful and poignant to say. You can almost sense her excitment in the way she sings, as she does on this track. 5/5

5. UPSIDE DOWN - This is a definite classic Tori Amos b-side. This is as well one of my all time favorite Tori Amos songs. Everything about this song rocks, from the sweeping piano melody to the in your face lyrics. I cannot sing enough praises for this song. 5/5

Overall:

I actually rate this EP 4. 5 out of 5 stars. Overall, this is a great EP offered to us by Tori Amos. It's not, however, something I would recommend to someone just getting into Tori Amos, but it is most definitely one of her better EP's. If you're a fan, this is a must buy! .
