Watts & Paris by Marc Anthony Thompson
He has a unique style that is unmatched by any other entertainer. Marc Anthony Thompson is an exceptional, talented, musician/entertainer whose contributions to the music industry have not been given proper recognition. A style that reels you in and hooks you once you start listening to him. I am drawn to many of his songs and find myself listening to them over and over. In addition to Watts & Paris, I also purchased Black Music, Black Yankee Rock and God Music. I give Black Music and Black Yankee Rock both 5 stars.


It pains me...
The three albums Marc Anthony Thompson released as Chocolate Genius are nothing short of. . well, genius. Thought-provoking, sophistocated, and funny, each of them builds on the one before. This is hardly the same person.

"Whaddaya mean, it's not the same person? All he did was change his name!"

After this album, I'm not at all surprised. There are a couple of flashes of brilliance on here (especially "Monkey", which the reviewer below also mentions), and they're the only reason that this album doesn't get only one star. There's no other way I can think to say it: This disc is a mess. You can forgive the fact that the songwriting hasn't quite matured yet (not everybody springs fully formed from Zeus's head), or rather, you could, if the songs weren't buried in the most cliched late-'80s synth-laden R&B production possible. Ray Parker Jr. would have cringed at these arrangements.

From anyone else, I'd have just shrugged it off; but given the obvious and abundant talent that he displayed on later albums, I was bitterly disappointed in this one. Save your money.

Still not sure...
Thompson is Chocolate Genius for those who don't know and the two discs available under that name are NOTHING short of brilliant. I've given this a listen once through and I'm still not sure if it's a good effort, a peculiarity or a work of genius.
Based on that I bought this. The record starts with typical 80's kind of dance groove thingy (technical terms abound here, eh?) but then track four appears out of nowhere; "Monkey" and WOW WOW WOW.
Monkey makes it clear that the Chocolate Genuis we know and love WAS in fact alive and well in 89 when this record was released.
At the very least this is an essential listen for fans of CG but if you don't have those discs yet, start there.
