Wrong CD in the case
However, when I went to play it, I discovered that the CD was actually "Best Of April Wine" which has different tracks. I ordered this CD and what arrived looked like the correct item. And of course, the song I really wanted was not on there. I returned it, they sent me another, and it was the same problem. What made it even better - the service rep on the phone had a terrible attitude with me! Don't order this - you will get the wrong CD.

Wrong songs on CD
However, the songs on the CD are a completely different collection - 12 songs, of which 6 overlap with the above and 6 are completely different. The songs listed with Amazon in the internet, plus the songs on the insert plus the listing of the songs on the CD itself all list the same songs - 14 songs in total.

Amazon refunded the costs (an international order).

I also bought "The Hits. . Over 60 Minutes With" which was a "better" collection with 19 songs. Only reason I order "Greatest Hits" was because it was supposed to include the John/Taupin cover of Bad Side of the Moon which I wanted (good bass line).

There is significant overlap between these 2 CDs (assuming the correct songs are on "Greatest Hits") and if you can live without Drop Your Guns, Weeping Widow, Oowatanite, Lady Run Lady Hide and Bad Side of the Moon, then "The Hits. . . " includes all of its songs plus another 9 songs and is my preferred choice (also was 1/2 the price).
The 4CD collection with pretty well everything they ever did is no longer produced and costs an arm and a leg even used (>> $100).

Actually ordered them for "Say Hello", which was likely April Wine's greatest single hit. Most interesting is the drum intro which is a slow 4/4 but as soon as the instruments come in, it turns into a fast 3/4 with a 3-3-2-2-2 syncopation but the drums continue with the 4/4, which is why there are a lot of off-beats from bass drum and snare. Very clever for those of us who are music geeks.

April Wine has continued to churn out generally good, mainstream rock and ballads over the years with many hits.
.

WTF?! Where are their two big hits?!
Why aren't they on here? Very, very weird. What the frack is going on? "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" and "Just Between You and Me" were their two greatest hits (or possibly ONLY hits).

Great Canadian Band!! 5 Stars PLUS
If you are looking for some good April Wine tunes, buy this CD. Of course being Canadian I think April Wine is one of the best!! Being a teenager in the 70's I bought every April Wine album I could get my hands on!! This CD is great because it gives a good taste of the songs I listened to on all those albums in the 70's. You won't be disappointed!!

Of course I would like to buy every CD that I have in album from the 70's!!! Probably if I can find them on amazon. ca they will end up in my CD collection now!! This is just a excellent band and if you have never heard April Wine this CD would give you a variety of April Wine tunes. From some good ole rock & roll to tender love songs. I could go on & on about how this is a great band. Just check it out for yourself, you won't regret it!! This Canadian band rocks!!.

A good recap of the band's 70's recordings
I thought they were a fairly new group but this LP (which had inner sleeve notes about what LP each track came from - the CD cheaply omits those) was a great introduction to the bands pre-Capitol Records era for American fans. I bought this LP back in 1981 when April Wine were red hot with "Nature of the Beast".

What impresses me most is they were able to pull off many styles from Hard Rock to big ballads to Power Pop convincingly and never lost thier edge or smarts. Theres a little sappiness in the ballads, but its not annoying or downright dull (like Journey in thier worst moments) and theres never any art-rock pretentiousness or overreaching (like Styx or Kansas). These guys were just a hard rock band who liked all kinds of music and werent afraid to experiment now and then.

I finally got a chance seeing April Wine play at the (now sadly demolished) Bronco Bowl back in 2000. They put on a great show to a packed house with members from the Dallas Stars hockey team and metal-thrash band Pantera among the crowd. Myles told everyone they had a request and played "Tonite Is a Wonderful Night To Fall in Love". . . Most people didnt know the song, but I sang along LOUD anyway. This CD is the reason why!.
