Editoral Review Moniker aside, however, their jazz-tinged progressive-rock approach fits nicely alongside peers such as Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, and even some of Zappa's early-'70s work. Yes, it's kind of a stretch--a tad unpatriotic, even--to postulate that a gaggle of British art-rockers can do justice to the Sultan of Swat. The band sets up solid though unremarkable backing on extended jams like "Tomorrow (Joining the Day)" and "We People Darker Than Blue. " But lead singer Jenny Hazan was Babe Ruth's most distinctive weapon, a firebrand who had more in common with the era's hard-drinking blues busters than the delicate-flower school of female singers. --David Sprague ..
