Good music is art, and this one's a van Gough
It hit me the way Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" did two years ago, only "Hour of the Bewilderbeast" didn't require two listens for me to "get it. I chanced upon this gem in a London airport recently, and it hasn't left my ears since. " The magic starts in a mournful key with a cello or violin, rambles along through beautifully arranged horns and turns to an acoustic-guitar-and-bell backup for Damon Gough's first vocals. His voice, while not quite as raw or acrobatic as Jeff Mangum of "Milk," is a soothing presence. A lyric in the jazzy and bouncy "Once Around the Block," this album's Single Most Likely to Succeed, instructs the listener to "take a left, a sharp left and another left. " That's exactly where this album takes the listener, switching moods, tempos and styles, yet never wavering from its eerie, charming spell. Nowhere is this more evident than "Once Around the Block" and the songs that sandwich it. The preceding track, "Body Rap," is less than 45 seconds of drum-and-bass beauty, and the following track, "This Song," has a ghostly vocal reminiscent of Mike Love's in "All I Wanna Do" on The Beach Boys' outstanding "Sunflower" album from 1970. There are a million gifts to discover in this album -- and many are buried deep in the mix, so put those headphones on! Bottom line: This album already is up there with The Beatles' "Abbey Road" and "Magical Mystery Tour," the aforementioned "Sunflower" and "Aeroplane," Spiritualized's "Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space," R. E. M. 's "Automatic for the People" and Cocteau Twins' "Heaven or Las Vegas" as one of my favorite albums of all time, and it only needed about three weeks to get there. Don't miss this one.
