excellent
This was such a disconnect for what I knew of her music. I saw several interviews with Joan Baez and found her to be laid back, funny and incrediably bright. I thought, quite wrongly, that she was like my aging hippy aunt, who points and corrects you like a child when you say "girl" and not "women," and thinks all people who swear are beneath her intellegnece. What a drag to be around, but Baez is obviously not this person.

I was projecting, and when Joan used f------k during the program, my heart melted.

It is just that her voice was always so earnist, pointed and deadly serious about her subject matter--not that the times did not call for this, but she lacked the sense of fun of a Joni Mitchel, Simon and Garfukel or Tim Buckley. Even during a love balled, she sounds a litte pissed off.

Dimonds and Rust did a lot to change my mind: she has a crack band here, so her music is a lot more varried than it was on Vangaurd. That Dylan impression she does on "Simple Twist Of Fate" had me cracking laughing, with Baez, not at her, and the song about children showed me Baez would have made an ace jazz singer if she had choosen this direction

But the title track and some of the other's hear still have that lack of humor about the personal relationships she discusses on the album, and that makes me THINK she is taking all this just a little too seriously.

But the more I discover her I realize this may just be the way she phrases, and attitude has little to do with it.

Joan leaves the folk behind...
. . Diamonds & Rust is a good if different album. Highlights are Diamonds & Rust, Joan's duet with Joni and Joan's imitation of Bob Dylan! Seriously Children and All That Jazz is such a 180 for Joan-I almost cant picture her singing it. Really good album but I do miss Joanie with all her protest songs.

Chasing down a John Prine tune
Driving home, listening to our local NPR radio station, I heard a song that I knew was familiar, but all I got from the announcer was that it was written by John Prine. First, let me say that I have been a huge fan of Joan Baez since I was 12 years old, and I'm now 58. The song got stuck in my head and, after checking every CD that I thought might contain the song, I finally went online to track it down. Well, thankfully, the lyrics lodged in my brain turned out to be the title of the song, "Hello in There". And, when it popped up on this album, I was shocked to learned that, while I have the LP, I never got the CD. So, now I do, and what a joy it was to hear these songs again, delivered in that crystal clear voice. I can only say "Thank you, Joan" for all the wonderful years!.

Still A Great Album
I bought the album when it first came out in 1974. . and I still have it to this day. When the CD became available, I even purchased it. The songs are great and highly recommend for all of you Joan Baez fans.

A fine album for an admirer since the early sixties
And once a year when I see something of her in a shop or on the web, I buy one. I collect albums from Joan Baez since the time I was 21, and I must say: I still like her voice and choices of songs. Also this one.
One of the best songs is Diamonds and rust, and I was very pleased with her version of Danny Boy.
I can recommend this album to everyone.
