most excellent
One of the best releases of its day. When you purchase this you will be thrilled. I tried to get tix but was unable. The video is even better.

What a surprise
I really do not listen to "The Band". Well, I used to play one of the Dylan songs from this cd. So, I figured that since I have it, I should listen to it. I was like over the top when I heard it. Not only The Band, but the guest performances were fabulous! I guess this is one of those purchases you think will just be ok, but when you get into it, the truth is that it is one you cannot imagine not having.

cd review
On time delivery. Was hooked on the DVD, now I have the music in the car.

hardy perennial
It features the 60s greatest living troubadours at their seasoned best, so within this music box time capsule there is the echo of the eternal. Cut in the mid seventies, this milestone album is a most loved request by my partner. If you had never heard of the era or its music, this might be a good place to begin a survey.

one fine, powerful and exhilarating goodbye
The Band decided to give a farewell concert for their fans in San Francisco at The Winterland Auditorium where they gave their first concert. The Last Waltz is a wonderful two CD set of the concert given by The Band in 1976 when they were just about to break up and go their own ways. The CD set includes music recorded in New York as well; and the sound quality throughout is really very good. The artwork is excellent and the liner notes include an essay by David Fricke and many pictures of The Band as well.

The first CD begins with "The Theme From The Last Waltz" and moves right away into a somewhat country/rock flavored tune entitled "Up On Cripple Creek. " "Up On Cripple Creek" has the audience loving every minute of it; they play and sing this strong. The electric guitars work well and the percussion enhances this tune. Moreover, I also like "Helpless" that they do with Neil Young. "Helpless" has some great harmonica playing by Neil Young; and listen for Joni Mitchell on background vocals. Similarly, "Dry Your Eyes" features Neil Diamond playing with The Band; Neil sings and plays the guitar flawlessly. Listen also for my very favorite number on this album, "Such A Night" with Dr. John outdoing even himself along with The Band. Dr. John plays the piano brilliantly and they all sing the chorus to perfection--I could never tire of hearing this song! There's also "Further On Up The Road" with Eric Clapton joining The Band to make this an unforgettable number.

The CD continues the hits--and the fun! The Band begins with "The Shape I'm In;" and this is followed by "Down South In New Orleans" as Bobby Charles joins The Band for quite a tune! The guitars are great and the Garth Hudson plays the accordion beautifully. "Ophelia" is another major highlight of this two CD set; "Ophelia" has a great melody that is very catchy, too. The brass is well used on "Ophelia," too. "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" is just one number The Band performs with the great Bob Dylan; Bob and this rock band never sounded better! Bob sings this really well and it drives the crowd wild with delight! "I Shall Be Released" also pairs Bob Dylan with The Band; and it works very well as Bob does lead vocals. "Evangeline" features Emmylou Harris on vocals and acoustic guitar; "Evangeline" was almost certainly one of the tracks recorded in New York because I certainly don't hear any audience reaction! The second CD ends with a reprise of "Theme From The Last Waltz" and even though we've heard this on the first CD the music remains intriguing and gives a solid ending to this two CD set.

Fans of The Band will certainly want this for their collections; and they might even want the exquisite and "expanded" four CD version of this two CD set. There are also quite a few CDs out there by The Band; and the DVD entitled The Last Waltz will interest fans as well. This is also a great starter two CD set for people just discovering the extraordinary artistry of The Band.
