The Be Good Tanyas - Chinatown Audio CD

Wish Jolie Holland was singing with this band While the lead singer is a woman with great timing and an unusual voice, Jolie could have taken the traditional arrangements, put her unique spin and otherworldly vocal phrasings with it, and created a truly outstanding product. Jolie Holland guests as a musician on this CD from 2007. I would like to see Jolie reunite with this group and forsake her current path of mediocre quasi-folk miscues. The Be Good Tanyas coupled with that homemade fiddle of Holland's and some really old-time traditional songs would do it for me.
Can't Put the Album Down
We listen to the album about once a week, and it sounds better with every listen. The first time my wife and I were introduced to this album, we instantly liked it. I'm not a big folk music fan, but I like this and highly recommend it. We own all their albums.
Honor Diversity
' I note from their reviews that their tastes run pretty hard to Dead White Guys. One reviewer writes, 'Another one for the "No Depression" poop pile. No problem with that -- to each their own -- but if you sometimes listen to artists with a pulse, give the BGTs' lovely music a shot, perhaps along with some other stuff from the No Depression alt. country pile (otherwise known as some of the most vibrant and important North American popular music of the past 20 years).
Some of the best of modern bluegrass (4.5 stars)
Not to say this isn't a great CD. "Blue Horse" will always be my favorite of the Tanya's work, because I heard a lot of the content live. My favorite is their cover of Townes' "Waiting to Die;" however, the whole CD is very good and very worth listening to.
Who'd have thunk a trio of Canadian women would so have bluegrass nailed? Just in general a very listenable group with great takes on both standards and new material. .
Another awesome CD...Great job Tanyas!
Now that I've given Chinatown a few listens, I love it as well. I already own the other two titles by the Tanyas and love them both.
You'll never find another group like the Tanyas. Their sound is unique and harmonies are totally enchanting. Buy a few copies and give them to friends. Highly recommended.
