Take it or leave it? LEAVE it!
Yes, it's decent rockabilly, which may be an oxymoron in itself. I have followed Jeff's career since the Yardbirds, and I have almost everything I can find by him BUT, after I bought this cd, I recycled it. Obviously, it's not my favorite genre, although I do like Brian Setzer and Danny Gatton, but I DON'T miss this cd. If you can buy it cheap, give it a try.

A Fine Reproduction!
Most reviews are from obvious Jeff Beck Fans who are viewing the Album as just another in a long line of releases by him. Well i am looking at the Album from a totally different perspective from the other reviewers. But to fully understand the whole point to this Album the listener needs to hear the original Gene Vincent recordings. Because Jeff and the band have gone out of their own musical sphere to deliberately mimic both Cliff Gallups guitar sound and indeed the full Blue Caps sound from Snare drum, double bass and indeed immitating Gene's clapper boys. That is in fact the wonderful thing about this Album, that not only have they managed to capture the tricky playing but also the spirit of the original recordings. My suggestion to any Jeff Beck fan who really likes this album is to obtain a Gene Vincent Album of the same songs, because your sure to like it.

Crazy Legs - Jeff Beck and The Big Town Playboys
This album finds Jeff in ground not really explored by his considerable talent before. Having sampled much of Jeff Becks work in the past, I felt it was time to try something a little different from the man.

Jeff drew his inspiration for this album from Gene vincent and his band, The Blue Caps. The real focus for Jeff was to produce a fitting tribute to their guitarist Cliff Gallup who was an early inspiration to Jeff. He succeeds and then some. The 18 track album consists of 50's style rockabilly inspired music which kicks along at fairly breakneck pace from track 1 "Race with the Devil", which in line with Jeffs love of hot rod cars, encapsulates the feel of the times and you can almost hear the tyres screech!

A favorite track of mine is "Catman" which transports you into a far seedier place, with a hot sweaty 50s night club feel. Mike Sanchez's excellant controlled vocals pouring syrup into your ears one second and soaring into 'tear yor ears off' territory the next! All the time ably accompanied by the relentless rhythm section and Jeffs equally excellant 'cut throat razor' guitar riffs. Atmospheric, sums it up I think.

In summary, If you love the early sound of rock and roll, you'll love this, it's all there but with modern production whilst maintaining a very authentic 50s feel. You'll find yourself singing the tunes in the bath and wanting to slick your hair back! A fitting tribute to Cliff Gallup indeed.

Should you buy it? What are you waiting for?, you know you want to!!.

Is this it?
In other words it all sounds the same and becomes tedious. The rap side of Rockabilly. Guitar Shop had some innovation and feeling to it. Crazy Legs is just not up to snuff and reflects his lack of meaningful direction. Beck needs to get back on the edge of Fusion. A genre that has been sorely missed in the Rock and Roll world. .

Twang
Put them all together and this is what Jeff Beck sounds like on this album . Danny Gatton, Les Paul on acid, Brian Setzer. . . FREAKIN great!. To sum it all up Frank Zappa was asked about guitar players . . and who were his favorite players.
Frankie said . . . " JEFF BECK IS MY FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYER ON THE PLANET" Well I say . . . F-ing DITTO.
