Toscanini conducting Beethoven symphonies
Toscanini has been by far the best conductor that ever played Beethoven. [ASIN:B0000CNTLU Ludwig van Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies - Arturo Toscanini / NBC Symphony Orchestra]]: Have heard many orchestras and conductors playing Beethoven symphonies over half a century. I am so glad I was able to get the full set from Amazon and have it delivered at a record speed. It took me back to the first time I heard Toscanini conduct Beethoven symphonies in 1957 when I was only 16 in my home town, Mosul in Iraq.

Hearing the 9th Symphony of Beethoven performed recently with a large chorus was a treat, especially since it was announced at the performance, that we could purchase all 9 Symphonies for about $30. What a bargain! This recording is OK, but in the future I think we will purchase something more "hi-fi" than this, even if it means spending more $$. .

Beethoven is one of the greatest composers ever...he also stole his name from that St. Bernard.
All the songs are radio unfriendly with no rapping in the songs, no distorted guitar, no St. Beethoven not only ripped off that movie's name, but his music is plain awful. Anger drums, and no hard bass. Just some music you'd find in an old folk's home. And if this guy is so good, how come he's not on MTV and why isn't there any Beethoven shirts in Hot Topic? Hopefully he can make a deal with them when he records his next album.

They also say that composers such as Mozart can make your baby smarter, but if you want your baby to be a genius, play ICP, Limp Bizkit, Korn, or Nickelback instead. .

Masterful, With One Caveat
I also disagree with excessive criticism of the recording quality - it sounds fine to me; not up to today's standards but the recordings are over a half century old. I disagree with the criticism of Toscanini's conducting speed - it feels right to me.

However, BMG or RCA (both have their imprints on the box set) should be taken to task for their packaging quality control. My set came with 2 Beethoven piano concertos rather than the 4th movement of Symphony # 9. I used the $5 spif from Amazon and purchased the MP3 download of the 4th movement; but I would have felt sorely misused if that hadn't been an option or if I had only wanted to play the CD's. So beware.

The music however is outstanding and it's wonderful to have all 9 together and under the baton of Toscanini!.

My favorite Beethoven cycle
Don't let other reviewers make you think that the sound is terrible. Stated simply, this is the grandest cycle of Beethoven symphonies available. It is not. I am very picky about what I listen to,and the minor imperfections in this set cannot come close to comparing with the positive aspects. This set has (in my opinion the best version of the 1st and 8th I have ever heard). I hope all that purchase this set get one tenth of the enjoyment out of it that I have.
