A Great Brahms, A Fantastic Stravinsky When I first heard her, I was put off by certain aspects of her playing, but now I've finally come to appreciate what she brings to the table. I'm starting to come around to Hilary Hahn as a player. Her tone isn't as full as say Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham, Viktoria Mullova, or Anne Sophie Mutter, but her overall drive and determination put her in the same ring as these players and may very well surpass them. Technically Hahn is flawless and her performances are almost partly detached emotionally, which gives her a certain introspection not found in many of the violinists I've heard. Hahn is, without a doubt in my mind, a virtuoso with a bright future. Her playing is also very clear as she plays almost transparently where you can hear how defined the structure of the music actually is. She also seems to serve the music more than herself, which is an admirable trait in a soloist, especially of Hahn's caliber.
In this recording, Hahn has a lot of competition in the Brahms "Violin Concerto. " Anne-Sophie Mutter (both accounts on Deutsche Grammophon), Vadim Repin, Jascha Heifetz, Maxim Vengerov, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, Henryk Szeryng, and the list goes on. What Hahn does with this concerto is truly mesmerizing. She handles all three movements with grace and precision. I especially like the way she handled the third movement "Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace. " I never heard such articulation from any other player. This is one of the best Brahms "Violin Concerto" recordings I've heard and I've heard almost almost all of them.
This performance of the Stravinsky "Violin Concerto in D" is one of the best I've heard as well. There is almost no competition for this concerto. Kyung-Wha Chung recorded this concerto with Previn and it's quite good. Also Anne-Sophie Mutter, Izthak Perlman, and Viktoria Mullova recorded this concerto. I have not heard these versions, so I cannot make any comparisons. I have heard the Chung/Previn Decca recording and Hahn clearly dominates this concerto. She has better intonation and overall better technique than Chung (who's playing I've never been that impressed with).
Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields play great. Marriner's accompaniment is very subtle and concise. The audio quality is also excellent. Highly recommended.
Remarkable!
They both are able to make Brahms sound musical. Hilary Hahn and Emanuel Ax have something remarkable in common.
Finally, a Brahms Violin Concerto I can wow over
Then I got Marriner/Hahn and I finally heard what Brahms must have had in mind. I own Ormandy/Stern, Bernstein/Kremer, Giulini/Perlman, Kreisler/Barbirolli, and Klemperer/Oistrakh. I may never listen to the others again. Marriner and the ASMF are sympathetic partners, providing a surprisingly big romantic backdrop for Hahn's gorgeous tone. The close-mic'd violin makes Hahn the star and that style of concerto recording appeals to me. I usually just grin and bear it while other soloists navigate the cadenza with their most virtuoso chops, but Hahn's intellect and lyricism make me listen again. What a find.
What a range of styles Hahn has mastered. The Stravinsky couldn't be more different from the Brahms, and Hahn is right on target there also. It's my only recording of Stravinsky's concerto and the only one I will ever need. And I now have her recording of the Shostakovich Violin Concerto 1 for yet another style and again her playing not only seems comfortably at home, but definitive.
Count me in the Hilary fan club.
Hilary Hahn recording is a keeper
Based on that old review, it was ordered as a
gift in December. This recording of Hilary Hahn playing the Brahms and Stravinsky
violin concertos was reviewed at release a couple of years ago, with
an exceptional laud. It came promptly, was appreciated, and (smile)
is in no danger of being returned. It's a keeper. .
Tepid Brahms, Odd Stravinsky
Szeryng and Monteux understood it. Brahms wrote the greatest romantic violin concerto. Perlman and Guilini understood it. But neither Hahn nor her conductor understand it. The Stravinsky, on the other hand, is very good for three of the four movements. However, the third movement drags as if Stravinsky's concerto needed a dreamy adagio. It doesn't, as Stern's recording with Stravinsky illustrates. .
