It's A Great Carnival! (By Paul, at www.milabooks.com)
The CD faithfully follows the story, written by Wouk in his book of the same name. If you're a Buffett fan, or even if you just like the concept of "Broadway goes calypso", you'll enjoy this unique collection of songs written by Jimmy for his musical collaboration with Herman Wouk. So, you will get even more enjoyment from the CD if you read the book, and then listen to the CD, which is what I did. Had to control the urge to rip off the shrink-wrap until I had finished reading the book, but I'm glad I waited. You can visualize the characters and scenes listening to the musical island beat and lyrics. The book's an entertaining read and the CD is fun, so I highly recommend both. Read, Listen, and Ejoy!.
Read the Book - Love the CD
I knew Jimmy had written the musical, and wondered if I would ever hear it. I first read Don't Stop thje Carnival maybe 5 years ago. This is great. Completely captures the entire story.
different- great
I bought it not having any idea what it was, and at first was confused- why all the different singers, what in the world is Kinja? Well, it took me a while to sort it out, with some help from the liner notes. I absolutely love this album. The fact that the music was great helped me stay with it. And then, one day I found myself rumaging through my Buffett for a poolside album, and I picked this one. It's been my favorite of Buffett's later career ever since, and I can only say I love it more all the time. The songs are really great, and it's nice to hear Jimmy trying something new- that's when he's at his best. Obviously, lots of island music here. My only warning is this- the songs don't stand alone. This album is one whole story. If you dig it, and want more, read the Herman Wouk novel. They're great companion pieces for each other. Sorry, guys, it's hard to quantify what's so great about this album, but give it a try. Thanks for reading.
Best Buffett song ever
JMHO
cheers!. Island Fever is the best.
Best Soundtrack Of A Musical I'll Never See Adapted From A Book I'll Never Read
The reason? Primarily it is the awful, downbeat, deus ex machina ending, which shockingly and pointlessly kills off a major character in order to tie up some loose ends. I fell in love with this quirky soundtrack after hearing snippets of the song "Public Relations" (during of all things a talk radio discussion of public relations!), but I have little desire to see the musical and none at all to read the novel it is based upon. Secondarily, I don't get all that much pleasure out of watching someone's futile struggles against continual disaster no matter how humorously it is written. The brief synopsis in the CD booklet is enough to allow me to understand the hilariously, defiantly upbeat songs without my having to endure either the lengthier tragedy of the musical or the reportedly depression-inducing 400+ pages of Don't Stop the Carnival: A Novel.
My advice? Skip the story, and just enjoy the music.
