Awesome CD
" I learned more about the band and their music, and decided to purchase my first CAKE CD-PROLONGING THE MAGIC. Who would think that a fan of 80's pop and alternative, once called "New Wave" and now "Retro," would like Cake? I was hooked by "Never There" and out of curiosity searched youtube to find out who did this song--"Cake. I now have 3 of their CDs, and while I like them all, my favorite is this one. I highly recommend it.


Do yourself a favor


This is easily one of my favorite albums of all time, and certainly my favorite Cake album. Have you ever bought an album because of one or two radio singles, realized that you absolutely loved the rest of the album (perhaps even more than the singles), bought the group's entire catalog, and thanked providence for the hours of musical enjoyment that you otherwise would have missed? That about wraps up my experience with Cake. "Sheep Go to Heaven" and "Let Me Go" are highly contagious, both lyrically and musically.

And please don't let the title of track 1 prevent you from enjoying the infectious groove and wonderful metaphors. Whether or not you believe in God, Satan, etc. , you will see yourself in John McCrea's words. This album is not to be missed.


my favorite cake album
They are very tight and consistently well-produced across the albums I've heard. Cake is an easy band to underestimate. They incorporate lots of interesting intruments and traps into their recordings and have come up with a very unique and recognizable sound. They also write catchy songs.

But I think the consistency and quality of their "product" tends to mask the work it must take to create it. For instance, someone's is laying down some very tasty guitar work throughout their records but the individual musicianship on these albums kinda gets overlooked and swallowed into the Cake sound.

They are also write some of the funnies lyrics I've ever heard. They simultaneously affect and cast a cynical eye at the stereotypical west coast white-bread corporate suburban do-nothing lifestyle. . . cocktail parties, corporate events, good dividends, etc. Great listening if you get the humour.

They also have a bevvy of good songs that were born out of the California car culture. It's obvious these guys are car guys and that's a good thing. "Satan. . . " is my all-time favorite Cake tune.

Given Cake's consistency you could probably buy any of their albums and get a good representation of all of them. But in my opinion "Prolonging" has a slight edge over "Nugget" and "Eagle".

I don't understand how some FANS could not like this cd. Maaaaannnn, I love CAKE. Or any of their cds. I love them all. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. You can't even begin to understand. You should buy this CD IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER.


Cake goes the distance

The album starts off with "Satan Is My Motor", a song laced with parody and clever lyrics. The third Cake disk, cleverly titled "Prolonging the Magic", hits hard with thirteen amazing tracks. Most feel the song is a direct refrence to the dark prince himself. Could it be?

A soothing rock song "Mexico" follows, creating an atmosphere worthy of a well lit night club.

Never There, one of the strongest tracks on the disk follows this, followed by "Guitar" and "You Turn The Screws".

A few happy-go-lucky songs come along. "Walk On By", and "Sheep Go To Heavan" have great beats, and clever lyrics once again.

The most creative track is "When You Sleep". A song about where people put their hands while in the act of sleeping could only be created by this sacrimento quartet.

"Hem Of Your Garment" is next, quoting the Bible, not referring to it. The Bass is heavy and the chorus is amazingly catchy.

"Alpha Beta Parking Lot" is calming, and chilling; creating a mood of joyous sorrow. The song leaves an impression long afterwards - much like the aftertaste of a pickle.

Afterwards is "Let Me Go", a love song that proves a point, while making you bob your head.

"Cool Blue Reason"'s lyrics are chilling, and mark your mind with footprints. The song instills something of a sad dilemna.

And finally, the disk comes to a close with "Where Would I Be". A touching Love song that, while being a love song, still packs some amazing bass and drums. The eerie sounding introduction makes you lift your head.
