Possibly their masterpiece
If you've made it through Eaten Back to Life (a so-so first attempt), Butchered at Birth (a classic gore death metal experience) and Tomb of the Mutilated (a sharper and even more extreme continuation of Butchered), chances are you're looking for something a little different. There's just no denying The Bleeding. The Bleeding is also dark and brutal, but it's more melodic and the growls and lyrics have taken a step back, providing a more mature, complex and realistic album. The Bleeding is enjoyable and magnetic - if you share a couple of Cannibal Corpse-albums with someone open-minded (or like-minded), they're sure to remember this exact album.

The opening track, "Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead", is probably my favourite Cannibal Corpse song of all time. Granted, it doesn't have the hook of "Hammer Smashed Face", and it's not as disgusting as, say, "Necropedophile", but its tells the story of a man trapped in his own body after death - a conceit presented so well that it becomes more horrible than any amounts of gore. After that the hits just keep coming, and they're all compelling and mysogynistic. "Stripped, Raped And Strangled" especially stands out, both melodically and they way it tells of a first-person portrait of a murderer. "She was so beautiful, I had to kill her!" is a line that's equally disturbing, (psychologically) understandable and hilarious. I think it's interesting in the exact same way that the show Criminal Minds is interesting - it's the darker half of all human beings, and you're being incredibly naïve or in denial if you don't believe it doesn't exist in you as well. "She Was Asking For It" also stands out, the opening riff just takes you by surprise, being fast and even a little fun.

Chris Barnes last outing is more similar to what he ended up doing with Six Feet Under, and that works well for the most part. If it doesn't, Live Cannibalism proves that these songs can work just fantastically with Corpsegrinder on stage instead. Whether or not it's masterpiece, I can't say for sure, as I could never do without certain albums or songs by Cannibal Corpse. The Bleeding is more listenable than any previous Cannibal Corpse album though, so even for those of you who got scared away - give this a listen.

87/100, They think they know who I am, all they know is I love to kill.
This allows for a much more accurate and unfortunately a much harsher rating for each album. AUTHOR'S NOTE: I recently moved over to a new review system in which I rate each song and then create an average rating for the whole album rather than just giving the album a rating based purely on my general feel for the album. Because of this my new number ratings may not match up with the star ratings on my older reviews when I updated them with this new review system. Thanks for your understanding.

The Bleeding is a death metal milestone that I don't think will ever be topped. Chris Barnes does a great job as usual, but experiemnts whith a weird sort of screeching. Now that I'm used to it I think it's pretty cool, but I know there are some people who are going to hate it. The guitar work is a little slowed down, but I think it helps the overall sound. It makes the songs a little more memorable and catchy when things don't sound like such a blur. The bass and drums are great as always.

"Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead"-To be honest I'm less than impressed with this song. It's fine, but it's nothing compared to what came before it. It's mid-paced but not very heavy sounding and the drums are pretty standard stuff. 7/10

"F***** With A Knife"-A very short but brutal and intense song with some seriously crazy bass work courtesy of Alex Webster. The lyrics are hilarious and the vocal delivery is excellent. 9/10

"Stripped, Raped And Strangled"-An instant classic. Extremely brutal and catchy, it's filled with groove and heaviness along with sone genius lyrics and vocals by Chris Barnes. If you can't headbang to this there's something wrong with you. 9. 5/10

"Pulverized"-An extremely fast and technical song, definitely a good choice to have follow a more groove oriented song. Awesome guitar work. This song is a blast and should be mentioned by fans more. 8. 5/10

"Return To Flesh"-Starts out slower than the previous tracks, but still plenty heavy. Some of the riffing is incredibly cool. Things pick up pretty cool with some really excellent drumming and some pretty sick musicianship all around. 9/10

"The Pick-Axe Murders"-This song is heavy and brutal in every way. The guitar parts are amazing, the bass is sick, and the drums keep up very well and sound just plain brutal. 9/10

"She Was Asking For It"-Another super fast and incredibly brutal track. The guitar work is a serious highlight on here. This song is just classic. 9/10

"The Bleeding"-Pretty different, but to be honest, one of my less liked songs on the album. A little too simple and very repetitive. Very strange choice for the title track. , but still very interesting. 8/10

"Force Fed Broken Glass"-Filled with stellar, creative drumming and some great riffs as well. 9/10

"An Experiment In Homicide"-A very heavy sounding track and a solid choice for a closer. 8. 5/10

My favorite tracks on this album are "F***** With A Knife", "Stripped, Raped And Strangled", and "Return To Flesh". It's pretty hard to pick just three songs though, the whole album is amazing and should be listened to all the way through. It should really be rated higher, but the lackluster opener brought down the average.

The remastering is done pretty well and makes the album even better than before. They also changed the album art to the far gorier original that never got used. There's also a bonus song, a cover of "The Exorcist" originally by Possessed along with the music video for "Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead". This is Chris Barnes' last release with Cannibal Corpse, and while fans were sad to see him go he left on peaceful terms and started up his now successful band Six Feet Under which I suggest checking out. We also got a very worthy replacement, George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher who is just as talented in his own right as a death metal vocalist.

Great album, Reissued
I believe Metal Blade Records did a great job with the packaging for this reissue, as it looks much better than the original cover art, in my opinion. I recently purchased Cannibal Corpse's "The Bleeding" album in its reissued form, and I would recommend it to anyone that is missing the disc from their death metal collection. Also when I bought it, it was 12 dollars, so it's not a bad deal. .

Sure, I thought their last album was terrific, but The Bleeding is from way back when Chris Barnes was still in the band. Whether the lyrics are meant for shocking purposes or not, if you like a band that has songs like "Stripped, Raped, and Strangled" or " She was asking for it", I hope you feel proud of yourself. While his growls are still very cool (unlike his current garbage band), the music on this disc is typical, generic early `90s death metal with some of the most immature lyrics ever layed down on paper. It's been re-issued with a bonus song-a cover of Possessed's "The Exorcist" and the video for "Staring through the eyes of the dead". .

A legend gets a nice little makeover
If you think Cannibal Corpse has no talent, then die. Let's settle this now.

Now since that is settled, "The Bleeding". The original, released in 1994 under the immortal Metal Blade Records, was sort of a different step for Cannibal Corpse. Different in both lyrics, music and even album artwork. First off, the gory theme that made the first three albums hated by politicans, parents and censorship programs all over the world, was sort of toned down in this album. Sure, you still got "F***** With A Knife" and "The Pick-Axe Murders", but it was really not as bad as the other three. The original album artwork was a 1 out of 10 on the morbid meter, unlike the previous two albums which were just plain disturbing. And the music. Well, the songs were slowed down (a tad bit), with some cool breakdowns, better structure, more frequent solos and just better quality music. Not saying this music isn't brutal, but it is a little less intense, and more accessible for the average person. The vocals aren't as low pitched as "Tomb Of The Mutilated", and they sort of resemble Corpse's sophomore album, "Butchered At Birth". Barnes even adds in some higher pitched vocals he would later do with Six Feet Under.

The album starts off with, in my opinion, Cannibal Corpse's second best song. The now-infamous "Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead" is overall classic death metal. This was a Headbanger's Ball favorite and was Corpse's first music video! The hilarious "F***** With A Knife" follows, and is a short but crazy little number. It even has a cool little bass fill in the beginning, which could get anybody horny as (. . . ). Then, "Stripped, (. . . ) and Strangled". Another fun fan favorite, with an amazing riff. "Pulverized" and "Return To Flesh" are the examples of (less) focus on shock and more on the music. Two classic songs. "The Pick-Axe Murders" (the song title never gets old) is another famous Corpse track, and more great riffing. "She Was Asking For It" is a lesser known song, and is probably their most underrated song. I love it. "The Bleeding" is the loser here, but it is still a great song nonetheless. "Force Fed Broken Glass" is a sweet five-minute opus, and a creepy breakdown somewhere in the middle where it sounds as if Barnes is choking on glass. And the album closer, "An Experiment In Homicide" is intense as all hell and caps off a legendary masterpiece in metal.

The impact of this album is huge, period. Great for newer fans of death metal and Cannibal Corpse. It could even be appreciated by non-metal fans, but that would probably never happen. This was Corpse, and Barnes, in their primes. Barnes would get booted from Cannibal Corpse the same year this was released, and Corpsegrinder would fill in. The George Fisher years will never match the Barnes years, no matter what. In other words, one of the best death metal albums ever. If you had to own one Cannibal Corpse album, then I would certainly recommend this one. Cannibal Corpse almost had their shot at MTV fame, because "Staring. . . " was a Headbangers Ball regular, but not surprisingly, never fit with the Nirvana crowd. 1994 was a great year for music in general. Grunge died, death metal was in it's prime and everybody was happy. Too bad that only 12 years later we are surrounded by war, terrorism and global warming, and the whole scene of music has changed for the worse, but whatever. This isn't a philosophy lecture or me ranting about the good ol' days.

This 2006 reissue is very different from the original 1994 release. First off, the album cover is completely different (just compare them). The CD is in one of the (. . . ) digipacks, which I totally despise, but what are you going to do? There is no lyric book, but are actually on the fold-out of the digipack. So, kiddies, you can get easy access to those lyrics to offend somebody! This is re-mastered, of course, and sounds much better then the original. It is cheaper. It also contains a bonus track, a Possessed cover of "The Exorcist", which originally appeared on the "Hammer Smashed Face" EP a year earlier. The cover is pretty good, with better vocals then Possessed ever had. There is also the music video for "Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead". What a great and classic video. If you already own the original, I would suggest you go and pick up this cheap reissue just for the video and for a better sounding quality. So go outside, turn off your computer, and go to the record store and buy it. . . now!.
