Big step up That album was alright, but not as intense, deep and melodic as this one. Degradation Trip is a big step up for Cantrell from Boggy Depot. I even put off buying this album until recently. . . ! But. . . this album has proven to be one of my all time favorites. In addition to solid song writing and haunting vocals, Cantrell is backed up by one of the best rock rhythm sections around - Mike Bordin (drums) and Rob Trujillo (Bass). They complement Cantrell's chugging down tuned guitar riffs to a t. Anger Rising and Angel Eyes being the albums singles are also a couple of the best cuts on the album. The opening tracks (psychotic break, Howard Hughes) are very reminiscent of AIC's Dirt era. Comparisons maybe drawn to AIC but Cantrell more than holds his own on this album. His best work to date. . . as part of AIC or solo artist. .
Jerry cantrell keeps alice in chains legacy alive
There will never be another Layne, but jerry cantrell is great in his own right with his own unique style. I was amazed by how much range jerry has even when not with AIC. I was drawn in by the music and couldn't stop listening. I know Layne would be pleased with his work. In close it's one of the best display's of artistry I've ever seen.
Save your money for the complete, 2-disc set.
I would have instantly gotten the 2-disc if it had been released right away. I bought this when it first came out, and then I was disappointed when they released the 2-disc version, which I still haven't purchased for whatever reason.
If the 11 extra songs are anywhere near as good as what is on this cd, it will be worth buying again. And I plan to. In fact, probably soon, because I have been on an Alice In Chains kick lately.
I give this four stars because it is not the complete set. But the songs are incredible, featuring sure classics like "Anger Rising" and "Angel Eyes", as well as "Psychotic Break", "Give It A Name", and "Castaway". Throughout, you can tell easily that this is the man that wrote all those AIC hits. One of the best cds of the decade, but get the 2-disc. For a few extra bucks, why not?.
Talented
You just can't go wrong if you are an alice and chains fan or a jerry cantrell fan. This is a lovely cd with a kind of type o negitive sound. It is one of those cd's that you put in your cd player and it doesn't come out for weeks!.
Excellent
You feel like you're on the degredation trip with him. Cantrell does a great job of translating his emotions into song.
Check out in particular - "Solitude" - though he says the album is not about Layne Staley, you can't help but picture Staley holed up in his Seattle apartment. If he had only been able to "pull the weeds choking the flowers in his life".
