Long Gone Before Daylight
What they wear is just beyond boring and looks like they shopped at H&M and the guys all shopped at dressman. I have no idea what the photographer wanted to convey with the cover photo. The book-let is a mixed bag, the font is nice, but that colage of pictures looks like they highered some college student. The music is quite good, the lyrics are also on this level. I find the vocalist vocals to be a bit airy and that is not a good thing. It sounds at times like she is struggling with the tracks and as if the music does not jive with her voice. They are quite average musicians and nothing that they play is exactly challenging. Even so it works, and gets 4 out of 5 stars.

New sound, took about four listens before I fell in love

Anyway, finally got around to it, and the first few listens, I found it too slow and the songs too similar, but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me, and each song started to stand out individually. I have all of the other Cardigans albums, but didn't pick up this one when it came out because I heard it was departure from their usual sound, and usually this doesn't bode well when bands do this. It definitly is a departure. There is no "bubble gum" electronica on this album. This album has now become my favorite for nighttime listening, especially when highway driving.

This really is an excellent album, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a good, solid, angst filled album, or is a fan of Nina's voice.

Just OK
The Cardigans earlier stuff: fun, a bit too fluffy. To get a feel for where I'm coming from-
Gran Turismo: one of my favorite CDs, I listen to it often even after several years. I own First Band on The Moon but I don't listen to it often.
Ok, now for this CD-
Long Gone Before Daylight: it definitely has the same, slower mood as Gran Turismo, but it lacks any standout songs. It's too forgetable. Frankly, it's boring. I'll listen to it because I like Nina's voice, but I don't recommend this CD.

Album of the Year 2003
I found a channel playing a song, which I thought must be a new Sheryl Crow single. I first really noticed The Cardigans one day in my car. I was very surprised when the DJ announced that it was The Cardigans. I don't remember which song it was, but I knew I had to buy one of their CD's to check out a whole album. At the time the only Cardigan song I knew was "My Favorite Game", and I had thought they were a pure light-weight pop-act.

I chose to buy "Long Before Daylight", and I could not have made a better choice. Great songs, great playing, great productions, fine lyrics and a terrific versatile singer in Nina Persson. This band had really matured since "My Favorite Game". Anyone who likes Sheryl Crow will like this album too.

Opening with the ballad "Communication" the high standards are set right from the start. The up-beat "You're the Storm" is equally strong.

"A Good Horse" could have been the song I mistook for Sheryl Crow.

"The acoustic "And Then You Kissed Me" is simply beautiful - a song that would also suit Lisa Ekdahl.

The airy "Couldn't Care Less" is my least favourite on the album - maybe it needs some more time.

"Please Sister" is another highlight - a little like Roxette; when they're at their best!

The hit-single "For What it's Worth" is simply a catchy pop-tune; and a great one of its kind.

The hymnal quiet ballad "Lead Me into the Night" is another beautiful melody.

The melodic pop-rocker "Live and Learn" is just irresistible. One of my present favourites!

The final two tracks are both lyrically very moving. "Feathers and Downs" is a magnificent ballad. The final track "03. 45: No Sleep" is a very logical choice for closing the album; describing strong feelings that may come to you on a sleepless night. Mellow and still very catchy - a highlight!

This album must be "The Album of the Year 2003"!! At least I'll give it my vote!.

What a great experience
Lirycally it's Nina Persson at her best, deep, emotional, true and honest. I don't know really how to describe this beautiful album. Production, the sound is really harmonic and the band backing up the sensual voice of Nina is really touching.
Definitely this is in my list of Top 3 albums of the year. This is nothing at all like their previous material, and in my opinion they have improved so much. Go on and listen to any of the songs and then make up your mind and own conclusions, it's worth it.
