Comprehensive hits collection spans eleven years
Although by no means my favorite decade when it comes to pop music, even I am aware that some great music was recorded during the nineties, some of it by Mariah. Mariah Carey was one of the most successful pop singers of the nineties. This compilation includes all her important American hits up to Against all odds, in almost chronological order. The sole exception to the chronological order is All I want for Christmas is you, which is not here in its original form. A re-mix is included as a bonus track at the end of the second CD. I'm glad that it has been put at the end of a CD instead of being part of the chronological order, because while I listen to Christmas music at any time of year, a lot of people don't like hearing Christmas music out of season. Those people can stop the CD at the end of the last of Mariah's normal hits here.

Mariah wrote the vast majority of the songs here, proving herself to be an accomplished songwriter as well as a fine singer, but she also scored huge hits with covers of I'll be there (originally an international hit for the Jackson 5), Without you (written and first recorded by Badfinger, but an international chart-topper for Harry Nilsson), Endless love (originally a huge international hit for Diana Ross and Lionel Richie - Mariah duets with Luther Vandross here) and Against all odds (written by Phil Collins, for whom it was a huge international hit).

Brits may be disappointed at the exclusion of Open arms, which was a UK top five hit for Mariah but was not a hit for her in America. It is a cover of a song that was a huge American hit for Journey about ten years earlier, but the original didn`t do much business in the UK. I still haven't got the Journey version, though I expect I'll buy it eventually, but I have got an excellent obscure country version of the song by the Burch sisters.

There are plenty of great original songs here, several of which have titles that have been used on other songs in the past. Indeed, I've heard several completely different songs titled Heartbreaker and there are plenty of others that I haven't heard, but the one here is definitely an original as Mariah co-wrote it. Picking out favorites among the original songs, whether they have a unique title or not, is tricky when there are so many good ones to choose from, but if I have to pick just one, it might be Forever.

Mariah's voice may not be to everybody's liking, but I enjoy her Christmas album as well as this compilation. For an introduction to Mariah's music, this is unbeatable.
