Beautiful Voice, Great Songs
Though this CD did not appeal to me initially, it grew on me and I cannot explain why it wasn't better received. I read recently on Wiki that this CD sold substantially less than her both her 1st and 2nd offerings. The songs are lyrical, balanced, and heartfelt. It is at least as good, if not better, than her previous work. Vanessa's voice is, as always, innocently sexy, playful, and inviting. She shows a passionate commitment to her craft. As a classically trained piano player, she is masterful -- so much better than any other current talent, with the possible exception of Amy Lee of Evanescence. I recommend it unreservedly.

Héros et Voleurs.
So. I'll start by mentioning how attractive the artwork and album title are, For that i'll give it 4 stars instead of the actual 3 I was going for. . . Am I bitter?, definatley. I don't fancy there being such a tiny selection to choose from, This is ridiculous. Miss Carlton has been absent long enough to provided us with more than what's given. There's no reason for the tracklist to be so limited- Whoever decided 11 songs is enough was sadly mistaken. Onto the music and great the album is. I do appreciate the melodies and how well written these songs are, A+ for that. I also love how they remind me of Catholic Church Hymns in ways, such a pretty sound. Though such a micro amount I still have to hand it to the girl, she still hasn't lost her touch for good songwriting. This is an album I enjoy playing all the way through most of the time. I love how "Spring Street" tells a story of how situations and people change, The message always gets me in a trance. "Home" is another song that catches my attention, the story behind this song along with the piano notes brings tears to my eyes everytime, beautiful. "Come Undone" was the very first song I was addicted to when I first purchased the album. "Heroes & Thieves" "My Best "This Time" and "Fools Like Me" are some other favorites from this album. I'm already anticipating this album's follow-up. Maybe she'll release the rest of "This" album, Kidding.

Good effort but overproduced
Carlton's raw, honest delivery vocally and instrumentally (my reason for purchasing) was all but lost amongst the bells and whistles. I thoroughly enjoyed this album; however, having heard the songs prior to release live, I was a bit turned-off by the production. Even still, this album has more hits than misses, and Carlton's maturation is more than evident. A worthwhile buy overall but, in my opinion, does not showcase Vanessa's strengths as a pop artist. .

Swept Away.
And the magic stays & grows, & even when i think i'm not in the mood i can put in a CD and i'm home again, and home is where the heart is. When i first heard a song by Vanessa Carlton i was pulled in & swept away, & happy to be! It is just like the kind of rapture experienced when rolling in the wind and waves on the ocean with much solitude and inner reflection. Heroes & Thieves (Vanessa's third CD) succeeds in returning to the candid and intimate pictures Vanessa can paint with words and piano as she did on "Be Not Nobody"(the first CD). These songs are the stories of a young woman expressed in lyrical poetry. I became a nessie quickly, while some folk grow into it. Nessies do not need an explanation, and will own all three CD's, but for others i say i find the tunes endearing and enduring. Even exiting, ethereal & evergreen. Vanessa can work a-cappella but it's fabulous how she and the orchestra complement each other just perfectly. In fact, the dubbing, mixing, and back-up singers energizes these tunes even more. The debut CD "Be Not Nobody" remains the favorite for me, but the last two CD's are equally enjoyable too. On the debut CD, Vanessa's delicious and robust treatment of "Paint it Black" is compelling & the Indian Sitar/Raga ambiance is brilliant. Vanessa's music rises above the average, has a mystical, kind of sacred-gospel feeling from the piano and a honey-sweet voice. Carol King could also do this. And i'm also reminded of the spirituality of the Van Morrison songs. The wistful and planitiff moods of Vanessa's intonations allow the listener to follow his or her own interpretations. At the end of Heroes & Thieves,if you wait about ten seconds, you can hear a little dog bark. Why? Why not? Be Not Nobody:-) .

Vanessa did it again!
I bought this cd and I fall in love with it. Awesome CD! her songs are so different of what you heard and they wake up your soul. Will always be one of my favorites. Don't listen to the bad reviews people give to this cd, they just don't understand and see the songs like the people that love her see it.
