Remastered?? Try Remixed... I expected to buy just a remastered version of the ORIGINAL album/CD. It only took listening to one song to regret buying this CD as it has been REMIXED. . . wrong. . . take the song "Yesterday Once More". . . not only has the speed been hiked up slightly, but it is a blatantly different mix. . . one example, at the time 1:25 on the track, a piano riff has replaced what used to be there.
I understand Richard Carpenter has a reputation for continually remixing songs, but do the fans a favor and at least advertise on the CD that these are remixes, not simply remasters. I want to hear the song I know and remember, but remastered for superior quality, THAT'S IT. I'm glad I kept my orginal CD.
One of my favorite Carpenters albums
That side closed with a brief reprise of Yesterday once more. As originally released on vinyl, side two (presumably the Then side) began with Yesterday once more, a huge international hit that also served as a mood-setting song for the next track, which was an eight-song medley of sixties classics. Side 1 of the original vinyl album (presumably the Now side) was more conventional, as it featured the classic songs Jambalaya, Sing and This masquerade, together with the less famous but also excellent Heather and I can't make music.
Jambalaya is a cover of the oft-recorded Hank Williams country classic. Jo Stafford had a huge American pop hit with it not long after Hank's original was a huge country hit. The song was also an American pop hit for John Fogerty (from his album of country songs, Blue ridge rangers). That version was only about a year old when this album was released, so the Carpenters didn't release Jambalaya as a single in America, but they did in Britain where it became a big hit, just missing the top ten.
Although I started by describing the second half of the album first, the CD version starts, as you'd expect, with the original side one, with side two following. The impact of the title is lessened on CD, as there are no longer two sides, but the quality is still all there.
Now & Then by the Carpenters
Performing some of their classics and knock offs of some rocknroll standards. Classic Carpenters ! Glimpses of their other talents and versitility.
Great CD
One of few CDs with Johnny Angel (which my daughter loves). Lots of good Karen Carpenter music.
Yesterday Once More
It's good to hear these songs again. It is yesterday once more. The CD has good quality and is recommended for all who enjoy the music of the Carpenters.
