Carpenters/ As Time Goes By It seemed that the soft rock/adult contemporary rave of the late 70s was becoming dated. As Time Goes by, a marketing effort by A&M to promote sagging sales of Carpenters product that by this time in 1980 was suffering from an on slought of popularity from other genres. Richard Carpenter, a marketing marvel for A&M in those days understood how to squeeze the most dollar out of his work. By re-releasing his songs in medley format he could easily capture the old magic and delight his fans without boring them. Not much on this record is new other than a few original Carpenter/Bettis pieces sung brilliantly by Karen. However the one gem that stands out above the rest and sets Richard Carpenter apart from all other songwriter/arranger wanna be's and gives this cd it's stand alone value is the brilliant "Without A Song" Hearing this song explains the true musical genius of Richard Carpenter. He remains unchallenged in the recording industry with his ability to layer and capture harmony, perform, produce and arrange. Karen demonstrates once again that she is at the top of her craft unwavering in her vocal perfection and gifted expression. Carpenters fans will not be disappointed by this effort because of this epic song that starts the first side and demonstrates to the entire recording world that this is how it's done. I credit Herb Alpert and Bob Garcia for recognizing the enormous talent of these two gifted artists and their successful career as a recording phenomena. .
Always will be a Carpenters fan!
An for songs that have been stored up for more than 25 years and released in 2004. We all know Karen Carpenter is the greatest female vocalist of all time. They still sound fresh as of today. Karen's voice is so special to me and millions of fans. From the Rainbow Connection to Dancing In The Street, these records from the Carpenters are classic. The Hits Medley would have to be my favorite track on the entire album. If you had never seen the Carpenters live, this gives you an idea of what they were like with thousands of fans in the audience. I wish Karen was still with us today, she would still making more beautiful music. Hopefully Richard has more songs stored up to release to us long time Carpenters fans! I recommend this album to you! .
excellent superb Carpenters album !
A fantastic version of "California Dreaming" that Richard restored from a late 1967 demo, truly a masterpiece. Richard went into the vaults, all them tv specials that had great duos and medleys and re-recorded the instrumentation in stereo!
Some of the highlights is a 1980 medley Karen sang with Ella Fitzgerald!
Another is a excellent medley with Perry Como.
This actually is one of the most complete better albums in the Carpteners catalog.
You will enjoy this truly work of art. Enjoy!

Carpenters As Time Goes By
Only for a very true Carpenters fan. This is a very good CD, but the music isn't quite what I expected.
Gem's from the past !
e. When I was younger (much younger) I used to record The Carpenter specials on television i. valentines, christmas and whatever onto an old mono reel-to-reel. I listened to them until they were worn out. I waited many years to see if any of the music came out on stereo cassette or other media. Other than the Christmas music, none of the other music was out for sale. There was John Davidson, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy & Christi McNichol, Georgia Engal, Victor Borge and even John Denver amoungst others. I found out recently that The Carpenters had a new CD out. I was elated! I could'nt wait to hear what was on it. I was'nt dissapointed. I hope Richard put's out other Gem's as well (Good Vibrations/Coming through the rye).
As Time Goes By is absolutely eloquent, a real treasure to keep. If you like Richard and Karen's music you'll love this CD. Perhaps someday, Rich will put this out on a DVD. Simply fantastic!.
