If You Want One of the Best... This CD includes all of their most popular songs in what seems to be the original mixes. This CD of the Carpenters is truly one of the best. They are listed in a very pleasing to-listen-to order with great sound quality of the recordings. If you want only one comprehensive CD covering the Carpenters extensive work and you want the "sound" you originally knew---this is it! I would buy this again in a minute; I'm so pleased I found this! I think you will be too.
Maybe not ultimate but certainly close
Neither of these two tracks were huge hits, but there are plenty of huge hits among the 33 tracks in between. This compilation presents 35 songs recorded by the Carpenters, all in chronological order of when they were released, beginning with Ticket to ride, their distinctive cover of the Beatles classic, and ending with Trying to get the feeling again, with was recorded in 1975 but forgotten about until it was eventually released on their covers album, Interpretations, and also released as a single.
All the songs you'd expect to find are here. Close to you, We've only just begun, For all we know, Rainy days and Mondays, Hurting each other, Goodbye to love, Top of the world, I won't last a day without you, Yesterday once more and Only yesterday - every one of them is included along with many others. The strangest song that the Carpenters ever recorded, Calling occupants of interplanetary craft, is also here along with their only country hit, Sweet sweet smile.
The Carpenters had plenty of hits around the world, but of course they weren't always the same hits in each country. This being a British compilation, it inevitably includes Jambalaya, which peaked at twelve in Britain, where only six other Carpenters singles fared better. Jambalaya wasn't released as a single in America, presumably because the song had been a hit there for somebody else the year before.
This is a wonderful compilation containing all the essential Carpenters tracks, together with a few non-essentials that are nevertheless worth a listen.
Awesome Sounds ... Beautiful Musics ... Beautiful Effects!
The Carpenters' beautiful sounds effortlessly create a relaxing, soothing, and warm atmosphere that is so tranqill . . that one is forced to slow down, to be calm, and to be at peace!
Awesome sounds . . . Beautiful musics . . . Beautiful effects!
Indeed, "The Ultimate Collection by The Carpenters" is an excellent CD that every music lover should add to his collection. This CD is one of the best gifts that I have given myself.
At last - the way you remember them.........
There are, of course, a few caveats. After all the retinkering and remixing done, I'm a little surprised that Richard Carpenter would allow this to be released, but here it is - the Carpenters hits in their ORIGINAL mixes. "Yesterday Once More" is taken from the album master, which doesn't fade cleanly, there are explosive sounds at the end, a segue to the next track from the Lp. Also, "Top of the World" is the original album version, not the re-recorded version released as a single in 1973, and which drove "The Singles 1969-73" to be their only Number One album. I would also like to know what CD Musicluver31 was listening to when they listed songs that were omitted - four of the choices - "Goofus", "(Want You) Back in My Life Again", "Beechwood 4-5789", and "Make Believe It's Your First Time" - are indeed on this collection. There could have been more songs included - the Carpenters collection CDs have historically been a bit skimpy as a rule - but having the original mixes of these songs surely makes up for that, after hearing them in adulterated versions for years. A fine collection that I recommend without hesitation.
Eh
Ouch, I never realized how hokey the Carpenters are. I bought this excited about the Carpenters songs that I already knew and loved ("Superstar", "Rainy Days and Mondays", those kinds) and then realized that the songs I already knew and loved were the only songs on the DOUBLE DISK collection that I liked. Fortunately, the radness of the songs that are catchy and great are more than enough to uphold the legacy that Karen Carpenter all too soon left behind. A good collection to buy second hand from your local record store.
