Customer Review Awesome Raw Early Recordings " This recording is definitely a rougher cut than the one that was later recorded for "Ferment. This Cd features an earlier version of "Shallow" from Catherine Wheel's debut, "Ferment. " But the raw emotion is evident in Rob's vocals here. The second song is called "Spin" and is excellent. Why it was not included on "Ferment" I don't know. That also goes for another early gem, "Intravenous," which later appeared on the "Cats and Dogs" collection of Catherine Wheel b-sides. "Spin" features a very accessible mid-tempo guitar-drven intro that leads right into Rob's lovely vocal melody. The third (and title) track is "Painful Thing. " This is a pretty good song, but it meanders a bit at times and I think was an excellent decision to leave this track off "Ferment. " The vocals are very reminiscent of "Ferment," but the lead guitar can't be somewhat distracting. The final track is a raw version of "I Want to Touch You. " It leads off with the familiar guitar riff, but the guitar is mixed with a ton of reverb so it sounds as if it is being played in a vast open space. Having seen Catherine Wheel live a few times, this version of "I Want to Touch You" is close to the live experience of this song, so if you weren't lucky enough to see them live, get this Cd and experience Catherine Wheel in their raw early days. . .
