Heart Piercing Folk Pathos & Poetry is inexcusably snooty, and has no taste. Well, all I have to say is Bjarte A. As in zero buds. Not a one. Also, Bjarte, for the record, it's not just Australians who think Kasey rocks the folk. Quite a few Americans dig her, too. (Como yo, hombre!)
And, again for the record, I refuse to call Kasey's work country, because it would never get play on "KTRY Radio - your source for CRAPPY NEW COUNTRY all the time!!" It bears scant resemblance to the poprock cauterwauling of that stable of "sexy" plastic bobbleheads kept by today's Nashville hit machine. Kasey's music simply too good - too complicated emotionally and thematically, and a little too unprocessed - for the grand 'new Nash-swill cheezwhiz moguls.
No. As another reviewer here notes, she sounds rather more like Julie Miller, or (as another says) Lucinda Williams, or less famously Serena Matthews (not famous at all, sadly, but she should be - find her on iTunes) or Sarah Harmer- you know, hugely blues, rock & country inflected folk singin' songwritin' lasses who can - and do - sing their toocanas off.
Kickin' doors down. Watch the girls. . and marvel. Dang. It's great to be alive, with ears to hear.
This album is simply great. Freshman, sophomore, whatever. Who cares. Kasey has laid it down, and well. I love these songs. The title track, 'The Captain,' and 'Another Lonely Day,' and 'Cry Like a Baby' (yeah, here's to a good cry now and again. . maybe they don't cry in Norway? Too much Quisling, Beowulf & Ibsen, not enough sun? Way Too Glum. Too bad for them. ) They're all good. They touch the heart, like all good poetry and music does. Her lyrics & voice can be plaintive sad, and have just a touch enough of that grit edge, to cut your heart ever so slight.
Anyhoo, to quote that last song on crying: Kasey's "not much like [her] generation, their music only hurts my ears, and I don't hide my pain to save my reputation, It's too hard to keep up with these years. . "
Like I say, she's good. Buy her tunes, I don't think you'll regret it.
.
Kacey Chambers has her own genre!
I play CAPTAIN frequently, never tiring of it, and I own all of her cd's. With lyrics you find yourself paying attention to, music which has more in common with rock ballads than country, and a voice which she uses like an instrument, Kacey Chambers delivers a fresh, uniquely different, yet highly satisfying take on Country music. .
Kasey is a *TRUE STAR*
If you haven't heard Kasey, you are missing out! 10 **STARS**. When I first heard Kasey on stage in 1999 the hairs on the back of my neck stood up - here was an almost unknown singer with an AMAZING voice, and singing AMAZING words! She deserves world-wide recognition for the eerie quality of her voice, and the words of her songs which strike a chord with all of us.
Nice, "safe" album by an young artist.
That fact is worth at least one star alone. So Kasey Chambers has an "over-average" debut and everybody (Australians) salutes her? First of all I must say that it's very good that she writes her own music. ! She sometimes not only cries like- but also -sings like a baby. The productions of some of the songs are terrible, and together with her sometimes (a bit) annoying voice it just doesn't sound too good. Except for that she has some catchy tunes and a fine band to back her up.
Good new old-fashioned country
The only thing that stops me giving this 5 stars is the final track - lyrically not great. A stunning album that will appeal to anyone who likes good music - not just country.
Aside from that, Kasey's voice is beautiful - almost childlike, blending wonderfully with Julie Miller's harmonies on The Captain. Other highlights are the upbeat Cry Like a Baby and the lilting, haunting ballad 'These Pines'.
