[Three-and-half out of five stars] New 'Trickster box set with five studio LPs released together, some previous unrel.songs thou5= Three-and-a-half stars, very good
*** = Three stars, good enough
**. Rating per LP:
**** = Four stars, excellent
***. 5 = Two-and-a-half stars, better than average
Next Position Please **** Simply the best LP
Cheap Trick ever did. The bass work is incredible
as are Rob Zander's vocals and song writing on I
Can't Take It, which scumbag ex-bassist Pete Co-
mita now claims he wrote - evern though he was fir-
ed by the bans two years before(!). Rick and Bun E.
are in great form here as well. Hope the 'Tricksters
can put out the next 5 LP set with: The Doctor, One
On One, Standing on the Edge, Dream Police and Lap
of Luxury!
All Shook Up ***. 5 Not as good as some think and not
as bad as the critics thought either. Though TP's fad-
ing bass work tries to drown out Rob's singing and Rick's
fine guitar work, it was originally recorded with Rick
singing World's Greatest Lover as a tribute to his fine
wife, Karen! Underrated work, mostly, on this gem. It in-
cludes Found All The Parts, ep.
Heaven Tonight *** A good but not great one. Too bass
heavy sounding! Songs are the best collection, by a hair
writing wise however. Oh Claire, the short jap. version
here, was a harbinger for the live versions later and
the complete version on '06's 'Rockford' (***). Best
studio LP of the first three. Neither over-nor-under
produced considering the overrated Tom Werman produced
it. Could have used Jack Douglas ('76-'77 C. T. /Budokan I/
Standing on the Edge, producer).
In Colour *. 5 Worst sounding CT LP to date, unless you
like/dislike Busted or Woke Up With A Monster. Totally
watered down except for You're All Talk, which rocks.
There's nothing wrong with the song writing, but after
the exciting debut, live in the studio, '76-'77 Cheap
Trick(which is not quite as good as the '97 Cheap Trick),
a disappointment. Sophomore slump, here?
Cheap Trick ['76-'77] **. 5 Kinda hate to give this one a
somewhat low rating, but there is some filler on here.
I really love: Hot Love, The Ballad of T. V. Violence (ex-
cept for the stupid screaming at the end), Mandocello,
He's A Whore. Those plus 'Oh Candy' were on pre-MTV 1st
LP Promo film, recorded in Milwaukee in Dec. '76. This
LP kicked it into gear for the 'Tricksters, but they
REALLY peaked with Jon B. Brant in the '80's when MTV
FIRST came out. Better than the MTV garbage of today.
