Ultimate COB DVD

The Main Program: The primary focus of this DVD release is a blistering live performance in Stockholm, Sweden. Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live is the ultimate DVD release for fans of the innovative Finnish metal band Children of Bodom. A Finnish audience would have made more sense, but there's no denying the Stockholm audience's enthusiasm. The band was in top form for this show, blasting through their catalog with an emphasis on the Hate Crew Deathroll and Are You Dead Yet? material. Alexi's between-songs banter gets a little ridiculous at times, but you can tell he's having a great time.

The Bonus Features: To be perfectly honest, I think the bonus features on this DVD may outshine the main program. There's a great documentary called Chaos Ridden Years that gives the history of the band with plenty of band interviews and rare footage. It's a fascinating look at how a group of teenagers relentlessly pursued their metal dreams. In addition to Chaos Ridden Years, you also get all of the band's promotional videos. They could have released these as a separate DVD (I know I'd have bought it). You also get a behind the scenes documentary focusing on the Stockholm gig. That one is a bit of a throwaway, but after Chaos Ridden Years and the killer video collection, it hardly matters.

The Verdict: This DVD release is an absolute must-have for all Children of Bodom fans. Whether you're looking for live material, music videos, or "Behind the Music" band info, Chaos Ridden Years: Stockholm Knockout Live has it all. My only complaint (and believe me it's a minor one) is that the packaging doesn't really live up to the content. Such an impressive DVD release deserves a more deluxe treatment.

COB video is AOK

My first experience of COB Live was a concert where they opened up for Iced Earth and on a scale of 1 to 100 I'd score them as a 5 just for showing up. I purchased this video as a new fan (4 years ago) of COB after finding them on a compilation CD and buying 5 of their CD's. Dreadful might be an understatement. I'm very versed on their music but this night even Metallica would have yelled "hey, you guys suck!"

Well. . . This DVD is a complete 180 degrees from the show I saw. . . The camera work scores a 90% and the sound scores a 95%. I'm not going to say they spared no expense because I don't know what their expense was but. . . COB did a fine job with this video.

Everyone from die-hard fan to the casual listener of metal should be pleased with this one.

With that said, I'll mention for the casual listener that COB (in my opinion) is a band best appreciated for their musical ability. If your looking for a singer with a pretty or pleasing voice you won't find him here. With a heavy Finnish accent and a raspy voice this isn't for someone driven by "beautiful" vocals in a video.

And, I've found that this video works best on a decent sound system. On my 27" stereo TV this video is OK but on my surround sound system (after setting up the audio) and cranked at high level this DVD is smokin'!!!

But, if your reading this. . . I'm quite sure you know what your getting anyway.

Appreciate talented metal musicians??? Purchase this video, I'm quite certain you won't be disappointed!.

Fair
Being a fan of their first 3 CDs more (I like all of their music but the first 3 are biggies on me), I wish they could have put more onto the setlist from Hatebreeder, Reaper, and especially Something Wild - maybe they could have added "Deadnight Warrior" or "Children Of Bodom" or even "Mask Of Sanity" - I think they could have made a live record with more of their older neo-classical death metal days, but this CD is fair - sound quality is good, but I think Alexi's screams have gone less-aggressive throughout the years. Alright performance-wise this seems like a pretty good live album by Bodom, but my main problem with this CD is that it's very dominant with the Hate-Crew Deathroll and Are You Dead yet? Material. Guitars are great, keyboards sound clear - soundwise it's fine, but I just wish they could have added more songs from their first 3 albums rather than dominating the later days of Bodom. 3 stars.

GREAT DVD
99 price tag. This DVD is CHOCK FULL of stuff, especially for a $14. The live set is amazing, the vocals are almost spot on with the DVD, and the playing, while at times somewhat sloppy, is great, and the guitars sound perfectly in tune, especially when they play the older material (which is more power metal sounding) and then they play the new material (which is more heavy metal)- it all sounds perfect no matter which era they play from. The solo's are great, and the Bodom After Midnight/Bodom Beach Terror medley (while I wish BAM had been played in it's entirety) is really interesting and fun. The way they do Needled 24/7, with the stop before the speedy verse, was cool, and Alexi's announcements between songs add a lot of flavor. If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought these songs were studio recordings, they sound THAT good. Sixpounder could have had a better mix (the harmonics are a little tough to hear) but overall it has a good mix. It's louder than most studio discs I've heard, to be honest. It has all their videos (minus Needled 24/7) and they are all fun to watch, plus a 47 minute documentary detailing the history of the band (which is a blast to watch), plus deleted scenes and a behind-the-scenes of the concert. This DVD is well worth the price, and if you're a CoB fan, you have no excuse not to own this DVD, along with the two-CD counterpart to this concert. BUY IT. You will not regret it.

BODOM RULEZ
Roope is an underrated guitarist, and although the main focus is on Alexi Laiho, you cannot mistake Roope's abilities throughout the show. I have loved CoB for years, and this was a great surprise. They are a wonderfully put toghether band, and their chemistry is amazing onstage, they are smiling and just having a good time.

I watch this every day, almost! The documentaries are insanely funny. I would give this 10 stars if I could!.
