Speedy delivery Will absolutely order from this merchant again. My cd arrived in a very short amount of time and it was in a prestine condition.
"Something Wild" is much like Bodom's version of Metallica's "Kill 'Em All"
I started out on Follow the Reaper a few years ago, and I was so addicted to that CD I'd play it for hours and hours every night. By the time I bought this I already owned every other studio album they made except for Hatebreeder (which I plan on buying soon). Then I bought Hate Crew Deathroll, Are You Dead Yet? (probably my least favorite of all their albums), and finally Tokyo Warhearts and Blooddrunk (both on the same day). A few weeks later I purchased Something Wild, and I have to be honest, I had mixed feelings about it at first, both good and bad. Don't get me wrong, I understand the fact that this was their debut and all, and it's a great album, but I couldn't help but feel that way at first.
First I'll start with the bad ones. The production quality is low, though it doesn't really matter to me since the musicianship makes up for it. Also, in all of COB's other albums Alexi's vocals are just kind of there to me. I don't like nor dislike them, I just pay more attention to the music itself. But in Something Wild there are some moments where his vocals don't exactly fit in. For the most part it's like any other album, but there's just those few little moments here and there where he seems to be trying a tad too hard, if that makes sense.
But putting that aside, the good things I thought about it, like I said is that the musicianship makes up for the low production quality. This is probably the most classical-influenced album that Bodom has put out to date. Like some of the other reviewers mentioned, you can even hear Mozart's Symphony No. 25 in the intro to "Red Light in My Eyes, Pt. 2. " If you are more into Bodom's later work (Hatecrew Deathroll, Are You Dead Yet?, and Blooddrunk), this album may take some getting used to for you. But if you started out with Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper then it may be more up your alley. Or if you've never heard of Children of Bodom period, these are some personal comparisons I've made between them and a more well-known band, Metallica:
- "Something Wild" is like their "Kill 'Em All. "
- "Hatebreeder" is like their "Ride the Lightning"
- "Follow the Reaper" is like their "Master of Puppets/. . . And Justice For All. "
- "Hatecrew Deathroll" is like their Black Album.
- "Are You Dead Yet?" (to me) is like their "Load/Reload," except not as bad, lol.
- "Blooddrunk" is like they skipped all the way to "Death Magnetic" and picked up from where they left off before AYDY, lol.
But overall, they have never made a bad album so far, some are just better than others. And Something Wild, though it may not be the best one to some, is still a great place to start if you're new to COB. I would highly recommend this, Hatebreeder, or Follow the Reaper first to any new fan.
The Album is great
I wanted to have the original version, just to have the cover full displayed on the box and not cropped or reduced like in the deluxe edition, however I couldn't find the original version, so I had to buy the deluxe edition. The recording is not as detailed as other of their productions, but it has that natural art, creativity and atmosphere that made of COB a truly talented musicians band.
Really loud, fast, heavy and raw, and I love it!
It took me some time to get used to the raw sound of this album, which does not sound nearly as good as any of the other albums. THis is my 3rd COB album, I already have HateCrew Deathroll and Follow the Reaper, sonce I liked those 2 very much I decided to pick up SOmething Wild and Hatebreeder. But once I got used to it I realized that this is actually a great album. Heres why:
First off the riffs are very heavy and melodic through out the entire album, the songs are filled with dual guitar parts, and Alexis solos are great, and some are neo-classically influenced such as touch like an angel of death, the Nail and Red light in my Eyes. Some people complained that the vocals are bad, they are not as good as the later albums, but since I can never tell what Alexi is saying any wway this doesnt bother me.
I would really give this album 4 and a half stars, but I cant so I gave it 5. This is great album, but If youre not already a fan of COB I would recommend that you get Follow the Reaper of Hatebreeder. If you like thos, then you should get this, youll appreciate it more that way, because while this is a great album, the quality is so so. For those who are already fans, definitely pick this up! .
Might be a let down for newer CoB fans, but still a must have
At the time of this writing Children of Bodom's newest release, Are you dead yet?, is released tomorrow here in the United States so I'm going to say right now, having not heard their newest album YET, Something Wild is my least favorite CoB album, but that doesn't mean it's no good. Children of Bodom actually started out as a band called uneartheD but were renamed to Children of Bodom in 1997, which is the year Something Wild was released as their first full length album. It just means they've been getting better and better with each release, depending on who you ask. I personally like their second album Hatebreeder, and their fourth album Hatecrew Deathroll so closely I can't pick a favorite of the two!
In my opinion Children of Bodom started as something of your typical thrashy shounding black metal band, before progressing to a MOSTLY thrashy sound yet with typical Finnish metal elements (the style and sound of the keyboards), and are now progressing to a thrash/electronic sound. Something Wild is their bread-and-butter black metal album. The vocal style, while changing very little over the years, sounds more black metalish here than in the newer albums, as are the keyboard arrangements, guitar riffs, drumming, and overall musical direction. . The interesting thing about Children of Bodom (besides the fact that their vocalist has to be, hands down, one of the finest guitarists on the planet - sadly not evident until their later albums) is that, unlike most bands, you can listen through all of their albums out of order and still tell which order they came in - they have a very natural progression from album to album and Something Wild is definitely their first.
This is a hard album for me to review without being objective because I fell in love with this band after purchasing the two albums that followed Something Wild, and was therefore already influenced by Children of Bodom's awesomeness before I even slid Something Wild into the CD player for the first time. For Children of Bodom fans this album is more of the same, or should I say the first of the same? Think of a band in which the members grew up listening to 80's thrash metal, yet were influenced by early and mid 90's black metal, then had a hard time picking which genre to draw inspiration from when it came time to lay down the tracks. That's what this album sounds like. You really get the best of both worlds here. On "In the Shadows" you get to hear the more black metal and melodic side of early Children of Bodom, but on tracks like "Lake Bodom" and "The Nail" you get a more classic in your face CoB sound much more indicative of the direction they actually took - thrash.
If you're a Children of Bodom fan and you havn't yet picked this one up, I'd recommend this album to see how they started and to round off the collection. If you're not yet into this band I recommend you try their second album Hatebreeder first, then go back to this one if you like what you hear on Hatebreeder. .
