New Album but Mostly Young Leonard Most of these songs were recorded by the younger man. I love the voice of the "old man" but find the voice of the "younger man" lacking in comparison. I wish Leonard would re-record his earlier songs with his old deep voice. I would immediately buy them all.
Sad and whispery
The songs aren't as solid as Cohen's past efforts, but that's what makes it so unique and characteristic. This album almost feels like his dream.
This is my favorite album by Cohen. If you have not yet heard it, and are used to his other stuff, be warned, that even though this music is very, very good, it's not going to be entirely like the other things he's done in the past (or in the future--after this album).
My guess is that most Cohen fans who buy this album will love, but I could definitely see the select few who are not able to see much in this album. .
Poet Laureate - Folk/Pop Music
Recent Songs is a fine, perhaps transitional album, with classics like The Guests, Window, Smokey Life, The Gypsy's Wife, from an artist who throughout his career has continually challenged himself and his audience. Leonard Cohen is a unique creative genius with a distinct voice, who in my opinion, has very few peers in pop/folk/rock music.
If you have the opportunity, catch Lenard on a tour that ends, I think, sometime in June 2009. You won't be dissappointed. .
He is a good song writer but...
I've heard about him for years and I was interested in that European folk sound that he sings. You have to be in the frame of mind to listen to him.
I can say for me the stuff gets boring after awhile. I should have bought just a couple of songs I found interesting not a whole album. One thing that bugs me about some of his songs is that they sound like one big run on sentence. the songs aren't compelling enough for me and he tries to hard to make his lyrics clever. Another thing that I would like is just a stripped down acoustical album without the background singers those are the songs that I felt had more weight.
I can tell he has songwriting abilities but I just find his work boring and tired sounding. I'll just stay with Dylan.
Recent Songs
Cohen has a very unique voice and you can always hear that it is him. Recent Songs by Leonard Cohen is a very good record. I have some issues with this release and it has nothing to do with the music. First of all the cover portrait looks ok but nothing more. Dianne Lawrence must have been a friend since otherwise I have no idea why Cohen accepted this substandard work. I think that Cohen is a great lyricist yet there are no lyrics included in the book-let. Even so this is a good recording that I give 4/5!
