A Must-Have CD
Contains the original album versions of "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!" and "Rock That Boogie" which are great. What a great album! Not a bad cut on the disc. A successful gospel original "Shall we Meet" is also good. "My Window faces the South" is a standout. And, of course, "Everybody's Doin' It" is a gem of a cover.
Spend what you must to grab this album.
CC&LPA's Best studio album ever, and the best alb um cover ever produced...ever.
I do not know WHY this great, great album is not available on Compact Disc. This is a great album. . . it was, in the early 90s. . . from what I understand didn't sell too well, and it was pulled from MCA's catalog. . . along with Hot Licks,Cold Steel, and Trucker's Favorites. But Trucker's favorites is in another review. . .
This album's best form is on LP. . . large pictures, cover art. . . There is nothing quite as nice as Vynl from the 70s. I spent about 10 years trying to track this album down. . . I finally was able to get a copy on CD from one of the commander's current band members. The album is great, much better than the MCA CD issue. . . The problem with the MCA issue is that it has the typical "Compact Disc Compact Price" Bastardization that a lot of their catalog has. . . they take out all the back of the album cover art, liner notes, etc. and it takes quite a bit away from the albums. Only three Commander Cody albums ever suffered this fate from MCA. . . and those where Lost In The Ozone, Country Casanova, and Hot Licks, Cold Steel, Truckers Favorites. . . all loosing cover art and liner notes critical to the enjoyment of the albums. . .
But anyway, this is a great album full of fun, awesomely good music. As Ferris Beuler said, if you have the means. . . you should definantly pick one up. . . . and it was never more fitting in this situation seeing as this album on CD goes for well over 100 bucks due to it's rarity.
It'd sure be nice if this album got a remaster & a nice re-issue. . . but who knows if that'll happen.
+1/2 -- Third album of hippie-country-rock-swing
" There's a stop for the Commander's eighty-eights at "Rock That Boogie," and a chart-cracking cover of Tex Williams' "Smoke Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette)" that gives Cody a chance to reprise the spoken-vocal prowess first displayed on "Hot Rod Lincoln. The band's third album finds them playing and singing as finely as ever, with a more varied palate of songs, including the acoustic gospel "Shall We Meet," Bob Wills's western swing "My Window Faces South," and jumpin' jive "Everybody's Doin' It. "
There's are some nice moments on this album, but overall it doesn't have the verve of its two predecessors. It's not as freshly inventive as "Lost in the Ozone," and it doesn't have the thematic hook of "Hot Licks. " Still, in 1973, this was quite the tonic for what ailed ya, and today, it can help take you back to that carefree mood. MCA's put this out on CD and then let it drop from their catalog, which means you either have to track down a used copy or see if the Commander himself has any left in his personal stash.
3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.
