60's Generation
Even though they were short lived, their music and legacy have left a long lasting impact on a generation of people. For those of you that grew up in the 60's, the Best of Cream should be part of your collection. Who could forget the two dynamic sounds of Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton singing lead, or the hypnotic beat of Ginger Baker and his double bass. This was a time when things were simple and this music made it more memorable. .

Pretty much all you needed to know
Trust me on this - I have a stack of bands where I have the entire catalogue and then buy a best of! Why do I do it! That's right, cos I'm a sad individual. Of course big time fans always own all the studio albums don't they? And then they go out and buy a best of at some point or three as well because they are sad individuals. . . .

But for the average music lover, flower power gen person, student of the guitar and whatever other personality types are attracted to checking out Cream this is probably as good a place to start as any to check out one of the bands who plugged in and played loud back in the days before decent sound technology. Hugely respected, hugely successful and a great synergy of musical talents Cream are way worth a best of buy. For the two uninitiated people ever likely to read this review the CD at hand collects a wad of wattage by this 60's band of British invasion blues devotees and the tracks run the gamut from straight ahead rockers like the ubiquitous Sunshine Of Your Love to the more obtuse lyrically Strange Brew White Room (I think they call them - whisper it - mind expanding substances) and down to more funked up numbers like Politician.

Credits for each track are included as are concise liner notes - which everyone said would die with the CD age. And these tracks have been remastered and they sound lovely and spring fresh. To tell the truth this disc pretty much contains the bands entire canon and showcases their talents and their influences. Certainly a better buy than The Cream of Eric Clapton in my opinion and given the price you can score it for there is really no excuse for any casual listener to not pick up this handy twenty track compilation.

Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, and "the other guy"
Those who are already fortunate enough to possess all four Cream albums already would still do well to pick up this compilation, as it contains two rare singles, "Wrapping Paper" and "Anyone for Tennis," the latter being a catchy little Eric Clapton/Martin Sharp song. This single-disc compilation is as near-perfect as you can get to capturing the very essence of Cream.

While this represents one of the greatest supergroups of all time, it fails to represent a vital anchor to the band's sound: drummer Ginger Baker. Two tracks of the 20-track compilation are songs in which Ginger Baker co-wrote ("Sweet Wine" and "Those Were The Days") and while these songs are excellent, one cannot ignore the sad fact that "Toad," "Blue Condition," and "Pressed Rat and Warthog" were virtually ignored here. Granted, these weren't exactly smash hits for the group, but it leaves out a significant part of this amazing group.

Best Cream compilation on the market
It's got all the big radio hits and several great album cuts. This album compiles most of Cream's best songs from their three albums, and is a great place for new fans of the band to begin. As with any hits compilation, there are going to be some songs missing. In this case, the biggest absense in my opinion is Tales of Brave Ulysses, my second favorite Cream song after White Room. But mostly, this compilation is both complete and concise, with no filler. Great for new listeners and fans who just want the band's most recognizable hits. 4. 5 stars.

Cream - 'The Very Best Of Cream' (Polydor)
Specially for the asking price, this twenty track compilation of Cream's repertoire is an absolute must-have for any true patron - being casual, die-hards or even young / new fans. Review number 96. This CD freaking smokes! Tunes that I might often find myself looking forward to the most while listening to this CD while on the way to a show, work, etc. are "I Feel Free", "I'm So Glad", "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" (one of my personal Cream favorites), "Politician" and "Crossroads". Highly recommended. .
