Great Darin Compilationcom and I play it ALOT. Thanks to the previous reviewer, I purchased this cd used through Amazon. Most of the other Bobby Darin compilations out there, either don't have 'Mack, the Knife', or contain too many of the 'Splish-Splash' numbers for my taste. This one is all swing plus it starts out with 'Mack'. I actually prefer Darin's style to Sinatra. His pop experience gives him great freedom with his voice - he can slide up into the top register smoothly with no fear of the high notes. Also, his manner smacks to me of a singer that doesn't take himself too seriously while he's performing - he's great fun to listen to. Some of the numbers here are standard swing which your other big-name swing singers have done aplenty, but more than half are a little more unique - modernized versions of pre-swing songs, like Cab Caloway's 'Minnie the Moocher'. This cd seems to be out of print now, so pick it up if it's available - it's a great cd with great sound quality.
Bobby Truly Swings
The voice and work of teen heart-throb Bobby Darin contradicts any such remark. Don't let anyone tell you that pop teen sensations can't sing or perform their genre of music to its full potential. Back in the late 1950's good and now classic music was still appriciated by what is now known as the Mainstream listeners. Bobby Darin saw how far jazz would take him into the spotlight and he took his chance at performing this great art. And his performances along with the musicians he performed with are; musical art. Everything musicily is here. There's an impressive use of dynamics, tons of passing chords, chord members are flatted, sharped, augmentedm and diminished, time is swung, a great display of counterpoint and movements of musical lines are used. The musicians themselves are amazing. Darin adds his own style and a perfect swing time. Horns, strings, piano, and percussion create the overall musical enjoyment and experience to the sound of Bobby Darin. They also know exactly how and when to perform the perfect cadenzas and solos. It is just impressive that wonderful work such as this record was performed by a pop artist. BOBBY DARIN SWINGS is definately an album to add to your collection. All of these tracks stand out, because let's face it: Mainstream music is just not as good as it use to be.
