Good Old Stuff
I actually got turned onto this when going through a huge 'Bowie phase in my life. I bought everything and looking back i really like this disc. Still has a unique freshness from a CD that was produced in '73. I was 4 yrs old when this came out so i actually heard a lot of these tracks for the first time when getting this.

Now that i heard most or all of the originals its almost like Bowie made commercialized verses of these songs. But it all works. From the glammy cover to the condensed (in many cases) length of the songs with the upbeat/modern production for '73 time period. I really like the versions of 'Rosalyn', 'See Emily Play' and 'Shapes of Things'. They are fresh sounding and just damn good even now!

This was a little side jaunt for Bowie, getting out of the 'Ziggy phase and entering the 'Aladdin Sane' style of glamor. I don't think it was meant to be a staple of his nor was it geared to change the world. Just to remake some good songs and probably to put out more product at the time (most groups made more than 1 album a year then).

Always worth a couple listens a year and LOUDLY! It really does sound good loud. I really appreciate the uniqueness and quality for this album. Not many Rock stars or groups did cover albums at the time. A must for a Bowie fan and a recommendation for all classic rock fans. Bowie fans or not, they should like the remakes. They hold up well 30+ years later.

Pin Ups

Don't remake a good song unless you can do it different or better. Won't you tell me where have all the good time gone?
It wasn't that long ago or so it seems.
These are both! All the nuances; the moans, the groans, the ooohs, the aaahs ~ Soooo Bowie!.

Remember that NYC Times Square Billboard?
I sure do, getting older but I do recall walking around seeing the cover of PinUps for millions to see upon it's release. . the beauty of this album, its artwork, was its primal energy and the fact that Bowie was able to redo these strong songs his own way backed by the Spiders, one heck of a band that rocks.
Coming out when Bowie was IT, what you have are wonderful songs that were Bowie's favourites at the time. . his reminiscing back onto the swinging UK mod scene with the gorgeous single 45 Sorrow worth the album alone.
Totally redoing the originals the chameleon that is Bowie plays a nice sax and a nice time is guaranteed for all spinning this CD.

Indeed, the earlier Ryko cd release has 2 bonus cuts, the b side of Sorrow. . the dirge like accoustic Bowie alone on guitar Port Of Amsterdam and a cover of Bruce Springsteen's Growin Up done at the PinUp sessions with a somewhat hoarse playful funky feel. .
