Compared to other Second Great Quintet albums, merely decent This ensemble explored a kind of finely crafted modality often called post-bop, which in its elegant flow and smooth edges contrasted strongly with the free jazz movement enjoying its heyday at the same time. Released in 1966, MILES SMILES was the second album where Miles Davis assembled his Second Great Quintet: pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, saxophonist and main songwriter Wayne Shorter, and drummer Tony Williams.
I love most of the Second Great Quintet albums, but MILES SMILES leaves me cold. The majority of the songs here are too restrained and low-key. The album unfortunately doesn't sound as good as its predecessor ESP; why is Shorter pushed far to the left? Still, "Footprints" is an excellent composition and the playing throughtout is fine. I just desire more variety. .
You'll smile too
I'm officially undecided, "E. "Miles Smiles" is thought by some to be the best of Miles' Shorter-Hancock-Carter-Williams group. S. P. ", "Sorcerer", "Nefertiti" and this one are all very good. The album starts off pretty well with "Orbits" and "Circle", but really gets into gear with Wayne Shorter's "Footprints". "Dolores" is an uptempo song. "Freedom Jazz Dance" is a slight recasting of an Eddie Harris song - this melody is slightly different than the original, but apparently the Miles Davis version is the way people play it now. "Gingerbread Boy" is a Jimmy Heath song. The improvisation and playing are at a high level throughout. Miles Davis and/or jazz fans should pick this one up.
ONE OF MILES' SEVERAL EXCELLENT RECORDINGS
This is one of Miles Davis' several excellent recordings and every song is great. Miles Smiles is a masterpiece. Circle has pretty piano to it and relaxes me here. I certainly wish Miles was still alive today. You should get this CD, remember that jazz was one of the greatest styles in music.
Miles Smiles Miles Davis Quintet
Every member of this band went on to become idols to all of us. This is a powerful example of the great Miles Davis. This may have been his greatest rhythm section. If you are a real jazz aficionado, you have this one! .
Miles Away
Picking up Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter & the lighting quick drummer Tony Williams, Miles was moving Jazz into the future which of course eventually led to his greatest period, the so-called 'electric' era. Yet another recording that marked the next movement in the career of the Last Great Jazz Giant. Stand out tracks on this great recording though is 'Circle', herbie is amazing on the keys, and 'Footprints' with it acoustic, yet African feel. Black musical intellect at its best.
