RUN TDM
when this was released, it was considered a letdown. it's amazing how time affects our perception of music. now, most DM fans count it among their favorites. that's why you can't really trust current music reviews, where the reviewer only got the advanced copy a week before its' release, sometimes even less. is that really enough time to judge a record? w/ me, i've found that many albums which strike me as an instant classic upon my first few listens, my enthusiasm often drops over time. likewise, records that often disappoint initially end up being my favorite ones. so what i'm saying is, "eat yr paisley" is your typical grower. standouts are "the thing that only eats hippies," easily one of their top 5 songs, "kksuk2," instrumental in the "surfin' cow" vain, sleeper "two feet off the ground" is fantastic, as is "i hear your name," a beautifully gloomy joe-jack tune that rod once proclaimed as his favorite DM song. i think the initial luke-warm response from critics and fans was a result of containing fewer laughs than "big lizard," but it showed considerable songwriting growth, not to mention greatly improved production. aside from all the pop culture references that really date "where the tarantula lives" as a product of the 80's (it's still a great song) this album has aged like glen livet or a good merlot. .

Melodic Humor
Earwig is a great sarcastic song, and Moron hinted at what was to come with 1987's Instant Club Hit. Although not as raw as Big Lizard In My Backyard, this 1986 sophomore album has some of my favorite Dead Milkmen songs. The Dead Milkmen help show people reality. .

'scuse me while I puke and die
Many of my friends didn't agree, told me the Milkmen were stupid and immature, and that I should get into something serious, like Nine Inch Nails, or something equally melodramatic. I remember liking this album (this band!) a lot 10 or 15 years ago while I was a smart-alecky high school kid. Like a sucker, I figured they must be right and slowly but surely moved away from the Milkmen to pursue "serious" music. But now that I'm more or less an adult, all I can say is that if anything, this music is better than ever to my ears. It's explosive and sincere, yet corny and jangly at the same time. It IS that garage-y sound that people are nowadays spending way too much money trying to find. The Milkmen were keeping it real long before "kaypin' it rayo" became an excuse to act totally fake. They just ARE what they sound like: smart, bratty, hilarious, goofy kids having fun. This album in particular has two of my favorites: "Beach Party Vietnam", and the IMMORTAL "Thing That Only Eats Hippies". But there's much more to Eat You Paisley than a few hit tunes; every song on here has the awesome punk rock bark of Rodney Anonymous- Bitchin' and Hollerin' about god knows what. All, that is, except "KKSUCK2" and "Vince Lombardi Service Center" which are instrumentals. Now I don't know if this is one of their best, I didn't used to think so, but I just listened to the whole thing with an ear-to-ear grin the whole time. So there. Get it and be wowed.
