Its got a lot of great songsC. I was at first skeptical that I might be into this band, having heard that their music was featured on little kid shows like "The O. " and other stuff like that. But I really enjoy this CD, its got some memorable music and is very accessible. Well written songs and instrumental arrangements make this album fun to listen to. I like the songs "Soul Meets Body" and "Different Names For The Same Thing," which are both stellar examples of what makes this band special. Some CD's you listen to maybe a few times, but I listen to this one repeatedly and its always been nice music to play. There's not too much else I can say; these are pretty straightforward melodic rock-pop songs that keep the listener interested and don't just fade into the background. Definitely check this one out, its a great CD even if you are one of those fans who was against their switch to a major label. Also check out Give Up by the Postal Service if you like the music on this CD. .
DCFC rocks out with solid album "Plans"
k. Soon to be featured on the New Moon (a. a. Twilight 2) soundtrack, Death Cab for Cutie have made a name for themselves in the music industry.
DCFC has been around for quite some time now, making numerous albums of enjoyable alternative rock music. Plans, the 2005 release from the band, is probably the most fan-appreciated album in their catalog. It has that rare beauty to it where almost every track is as good, if not better, than the one before it. This is the quintessential Death Cab album, one you would supply a new listener with so they could obtain a good taste of the band. Recently, they released the album Narrow Stairs, which met a lukewarm reception. When DCFC posted a poll on their Myspace page asking fans to vote for Narrow Stairs for best album of the year, many fans said that they were going to vote for other albums, such as Okkervil River, stating that the new album, in so many words, couldn't shine Plans' shoes.
On Plans, frontman Ben Gibbard describes certain moments, memories and emotion with such specific details rarely seen in music of this genre. Also, for such a seemingly dark name and album cover, (just going to prove that you can't judge by either), some songs on the album, such as "Soul Meets Body", are so light and catchy, you'll have them stuck in your head for days. Other songs are dark, yes, but so melodic and alluring that you'll listen at full attention to what Gibbard has to say and might even realize you can relate to some of his material.
Here, you can read a brief description, with numerical rating, of each track on the album. Amazon's price of $14. 99 is a bit steep for an album that came out four years ago, but that is only a testament as to how popular and truly enjoyable it continues to be among new listeners and steadfast fans.
Track 1: Marching Bands of Manhattan--(8)--light organ music greets us as the opening track begins, where Gibbard is trying to open the mind and eyes of his love to the wonders all around and states that if she doesn't make a decision soon and keeps wallowing in her sorrow, the love will drown them both.
Track 2: Soul Meets Body--(9)--a song of love with "Bada"'s that will get stuck in your head for sure, this is a beautiful tribute to dreaming while with the one you love. Strong lyric from the chorus: "And I do believe it's true that there are roads left in both of our shoes, but if the silence takes you then I hope it takes me too. "
Track 3: Summer Skin--(8)--a lament of summers past and reminiscing of the one you loved that could only last the one season.
Track 4: Different Names for the Same Thing--(6)--a piano ballad that states that no matter where you go, it's all the same. You don't need to reference the map in your pocket because the trees, the streets, it's all the same thing, just differently named.
Track 5: I Will Follow You Into the Dark--(10)--an acoustic genius of a song that poetically paints the beauty of loving someone so much that, when the day comes that they have to die, you'll gladly be right there with them. "If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks, then I will follow you into the dark. "
Track 6: Your Heart is an Empty Room--(8)--a song about feeling lonely in the wake of lost love but if you just look out your window, there are numerous ways to not be alone anymore. Sometimes you have to sink into depression first to understand that you can be saved, that everything is truly okay and hope exists if you just try.
Track 7: Someday You Will Be Loved--(8)--Gibbard has left his lady love but he won't get down about it. She'll be okay, someday she will be loved again. Broken hearts eventually mend and all of the memories they had created together will blur into one bad dream and she'll be able to move on.
Track 8: Crooked Teeth--(7)--"You can't find nothing at all if there was nothing there all along. " A song about trying to make something out of nothing, trying to live a lie that you fooled yourself into existence when in reality, it was doomed from the start.
Track 9: What Sarah Said--(10)--anyone who has ever lost a loved one in a hospital can relate to this song. While Gibbard is sitting in the waiting room, essentially waiting for his loved one to die in their hospital bed, he remembers the wise advise of Sarah who said, "love is watching someone die".
Track 10: Brothers on a Hotel Bed--(7)--Gibbard is accepting the fact that he and his loved one are no longer as young as they used to be, how they wanted so bad to leave the city when they were younger and yet, here they still sit, strangers to each other now.
Track 11: Stable Song--(6)--a peaceful song to bow out on, Gibbard has realized that he will repeat the same defeats in his future that he experienced in his past. He knows that remembering some things, especially over a long period of time, just gets more and more painful with age, but he doesn't mind, he'll keep on.
Overall album rating: 8.
This connects to my soul
The music will not only calm you down, but it will also make you happy or make you cry or make you fall in love. This is one of the best albums by one of the best bands of all time. Any way you want to take it, this is a beautiful album with beautiful music.
I truly love every song on this album. There is no other album in the world like that.
What you must do is listen to the lyrics (which isn't hard). These will speak to your soul and touch you on some of the most basic human level. My personal favorites are "Soul Meets Body," "What Sarah Said," "I Will Follow You Into The Dark," "Marching Bands of Manhattan," and "Crooked Teeth. " (Yes, that's half the album). These lyrics can speak to you and make you think about your life. I sometimes sing these songs when I feel that the lyrics are what I feel.
These songs will not leave you--they connect to one's soul in ways that very few musicians can accomplish. Definitely a must-have.
A perfect album
Not a bad song on the lot. Albums like this come don't come around very often. Amazingly good for an American band. Definately a keeper!.
Perfect in every way
It is perfect in every way. Having just gotten into this band over the last year, I can already say that "Plans" is their masterpiece, and one of the best cds I have heard in the last few years.
The melodies that Death Cab come up with are always so infectious, and they always manage to stay with you, long after you have stopped listening. The lyrics, written by singer and guitar player Ben Gibbard, are usually pretty stellar, and he was on the top of his game in this regard on this record.
It is not easy to write and record a record where every song is both memorable and catchy, but that is what Death Cab managed to do with "Plans. " From the upbeat catchiness of "Crooked Teeth" and "Soul Meets Body," to the melancholy dreariness of "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" and "Someday You Will Be Loved," and to the crushing heartaches of "What Sarah Said" and "Your Heart Is an Empty Room," this record runs the gauntlet.
5 stars, each one of them very deserving, for one of 2005's best!
