An Awesome Debut!
It's full of great rockers, like ROCK BRIGADE, WASTED, IT DON'T MATTER. If you want a taste of Def Leppard's roots, check this album out. . . . Hell, the whole album ROCKS!

While i am a fan of Hysteria the most, i feel every fan should listen to every one of their cd's, to get a taste of the different musical paths they went down, cuz it's all GOOD!!! Do yourself a favor, and buy this albums, at all costs.

Take you where the lights are bright...
How come it seems like the only people who don't like his album are Def Leppard themselves? Real metal fans love this record as the powerhouse riffs and leaden production make `On Through the Night' one of the shining beacons of the NWOBHM! In several interviews Joe Elliot has said that he cringes or needs to drink heavily to listen to this record and that bothers me when the artists don't love their work as much as the fans do; are we stupid or something? To Joe I say, forget you! Yes your vocal style is terribly underdeveloped and the lyrics may seem naïve and juvenile but I love it! "Rock Brigade", "Wasted", "Hello America", "Satellite", "Sorrow Is a Woman (could be their best ballad ever, I'm not kidding. . . "Hysteria"????? PLEASE!!!), "Answer to the Master" and "Overture" deserve mention as among the best songs that the Lepps ever did. I ask you, did the band improve that dramatically that they can kiss off `OTTN'?? It doesn't matter that Mutt Lange wasn't there. If you are among the masses who bemoan that the fact that Def Leppard long ago stop trying to be UFO and Thin Lizzy and tried to be the English Bon Jovi then you probably already have this LP and its follow-up. But for the others who can't believe Def Leppard was ever a metal band. . . then get this record. . . won't you help me get out??? Sorry Joe, your real fans love `On Through the Night" and there is nothing you can do about it! Now shut up and take a little trip down to CALIFORN -I -A!.

Sorry folks... It's all downhill after this album
He said, "They're called 'Def Leppard'???!!???" Anyway I heard "Rocks Off" and thought to myself "Damn! that's a MONSTER of a main riff! Heavy, lively and catchy. I first heard Def Leppard on the radio after a friend told me to listen for them on a local station. . . " So I bought the album and wasn't disappointed. There's not a bad song on it, although some aren't as strong as others. I won't review them all, just a couple highlights.
Wasted: Great song, another great main riff
Rocks Off: Already discussed , but still worth another mention.
Answer to the Master: Classic Hardrock/Metal
Overture: Well done classic hardrock/metal epic

With their debut album "On Through the Night", Def Leppard showed great promise and potential that, sadly, was lost or never fulfilled. The music was heavy(for the time period) melodic and had natural, well thought out arrangements( not to mention well done and interesting vocal harmonies - Joe Elliot actually sings well!).

If you're a fan of their later releases, you probably won't appreciate this album. Mutt Lange, you ruined a band that could really have been incredible. You made millions(and they did as well), but at what cost? "High and Dry", "Pyromania", "Hysteria", "Adrenalize". . . sigh*.

Beginning of the Best !
. Leppards first album . . I love this album like anything they've done there's nothing bad about this album. . . I wish they would play more of this stuff live. . . and beginning with this album they need to re-release it remastered maybe some bonous tracks but I think alot of New Age Def Leppard fans might re-discover their fanhood if this were to be re-released now given their excuse for not playing it live is no one really knows about this album. . . if you like anything else from these guys you definitley need to give this one a shot. . . cuz this truly was the beginning of the best
.
