Can't Pull The Wool Over People's Eyes Forever... They continue to put out new albums, but they are not good. Def Leppard have been running on the successes of everything they did from 1980-1992. The songs lack hooks and good lyrics. It seems like they are following the trend of detuned guitars and a modern approach that stays away from big choruses and simple, effective guitar riffs. Bands like Def Leppard need to simplify things. That's what Mutt Lange would say if he were still producing them today. Keep it simple, lose the effects, add some emotion and draw people in.
As of October 25th, 2009, the band cancelled the third leg of their North American coliseum tour through Canada due to poor ticket sales. And little wonder. If each member of the band is pulling in around $200 K/year, you can't pull the wool over people's eyes forever. I'm sure (like greedy CEO's) they are making more than that, but let's make the point for argument sake. You can live off your early successes for a few years, but then you need to get going or you're gone!!.
Comeback? They are back? Are you crazy?
This CD is boring and so darn cheesy. This is a sad day when people have to "want" to like an old great rock band so much, they actually think a crappy CD is good. Songs like "Bad Actress" are just awful. Its like a 5 year just ran around and started to spew out melodies and Def Leppard took them. The opening track "Go" offers some hope with its decent intro, but then it just fails to rock. I have loved this band since On Through the Night, but its time to just stop buying their new CD's. I have kept this CD in my player for a week, trying to like it. ITs just so not good.
Great like aged wine, they just get better.
The music still had their hard beat that I love and the concert was awesome!. This is a great cd.
It's clear that now the group is a bit older they want to be pop-stars
" I thought they lost them after Leppard's attempt at pop music on their last studio album X. The Good
Holy crap! The guitarists finally discovered the distortion button on their amps for the opening track "Go. It's not full-out hard rock like the group's early work, but it still packs a punch. "Nine Lives" takes a blusey twist, or a country twist if you will with the guest vocal appearance of Tim McGraw. The song is rich with melody despite it's country feel. "C'mon C'mon" has a 70s rock groove to it, which the group must have gotten the flavor for on their covers album Yeah!. "Cruise Control" is raw, faded, and echoed. The meaty guitar riffs return on "Hallucinate. " "Only the Good Die Young" is a touching tribute to fallen entertainers. Def Leppard is still feeling the 70s groove on "Bad Actress," only this time they delivery and energy overload.
The Bad
The ballad "Love" is bit too sappy for Def Leppard. Barry Manilow maybe.
The Verdict
It's clear that now the group is a bit older they want to be pop-stars. Most fans found this hard to swallow on their last studio effort. However, on Songs From the Sparkle Lounge, Def Leppard finds a way to mix their current fondness for pop, with their tride and true hard rock sound. Sure, they've toned the 80s arena rock guitars and replaced them with fuzzy 70s tones, but the crunch rocks just the same. Call me a die hard though, I still crave the big-guitars, heavily polished sound of their hey-day.
Def Leppard rules!
I like most of this album the song C'mon C'mon is the catchiest and most pop hook worthy, the others show a different side of Def Leppard, and may not please hard core Leppard fans but a very worthy addition to their discography.
