Best of Volume 1 Means There Should Be A Best of Volume 2 There recent albums haven't been as strong as their 80's and 90's albums but I still enjoy them. I grew up in the 80's idolizing this band who has a claim for being one of the greatest bands ever. Ok, now my subject here is that this is called Best Of Volume 1, will there be a Best Of Volume 2? There's a whole slew of early videos they can include on Volume 2 including See You, The Meaning Of Love, Get The Balance Right, Love In Itself, etc. They can also do a full dvd of all of their UK TV Appearances on shows such as Top Of The Pops. Just can't get enough of Depeche Mode, pun intended!.
Great music with great videos!
It contains 23 videos and a 30 minute documentry with band members and some other people talking about various songs. I have to say that I already own this CD and bought this version strictly so I could get the DVD. I don't agree with everything about the CD/DVD set. Some of the videos that appear on the DVD don't appear on the CD, and vice versa. Songs like "A Questioin of Lust" and "Policy of Truth" don't appear on either. This is well worth the price for the DVD alone and you get great videos like "Enjoy the Silence", "People Are People", "Shake the Disease", "I Feel You", and "Never Let Me Down Again". My only complaints are that it doesn't include the second version of "Strangelove" called "Strangelove '88" and their material after "Songs of Faith and Devotion" sounds a little too poppy for me. If you want a more thorough best of package you should buy The Singles 81-85 and The Singles 86-98.

Great CD/DVD package, but where's Black Celebration?
However, the actual audio content of this CD is disappointing. I bought this collection for the videos DVD, and I wasn't disappointed; it provided some music videos not previously released on DVD (though I'm waiting on the entire Some Great Videos set to come to DVD--which has about a icecube's chance in Hades of happening). The most glaring omission is a representative track from Black Celebration, which is the favorite DM LP of many fans. Adding either "A Question of Time" or "Stripped" would have made me believe this is a true retrospective "Best of" set, though I understand that Daniel Miller (head of Mute records, who put this set together) has said the following about Black Celebration: "The songs aren't good enough, there aren't any singles and it'll never get played on the radio. " The DM fans love you, Danny Boy, but get over it.
Another note: While "See You" was a big Depeche Mode hit in the UK, I think "Leave in Silence" would have been a better representative of the transitional period of A Broken Frame, because it is a great indicator of the direction DM is beginning to take musically.
TOTALLY WORTH IT...but you still need more, of course!
So this release gets 5/5, not for being all-inclusive, but for being a solid little package. Theres no way to put every great Depeche Mode song out on 1 or even 2 discs. The perfect way to turn a friend on to your favorite band. Vol 1 features a solid selection of songs, which provided the building blocks for neo-synthpoppers Ladytron, Freezepop, Goldfrapp, Hyperbubble, Mission Giant, and countless others. If you're a newcomer to old school synthpop, you'll eventually need to get all the DM albums, (of course!), but this is a great place to start + the previously unreleased track is quality and worth the time and money of longtime DM fans. Hey, even if you never listen to the CD, the DVD is worth the price alone! .
A Fine Career-Spanning Overview For Starters
K smash "Just Can't Get Enough" and 1985's USA Top 20 "People Are People" to the modern-rock dance hits "Strangelove","Shake The Disease" and "Never Let Me Down Again" to the breakthough smashes "Personal Jesus","Enjoy The Silence" and "I Feel You"(sorry,no "Policy Of Truth") to such recent highlights "Dream On","It's No Good","Precious","Suffer Well" (the last two from 2005's "Playing The Angel")and the unreleased track "Martyr",all in fine remastered sonic glory thanks to engineer Simon Heyworth. Most of the big hits are here, from the bouncy 1981 U. The DVD features most,if not all, of their videos in great picture and sound and a short but entertaing 30-minute film showcasing and discussing the DM songs featured on this collection. All in all,an excellent introduction to the music of Depeche Mode for the novice. Bring on Vol. 2!.
