Fantastic remaster - and HDCD too! I never owned the vinyl on this one. The only version I had ever heard of this album was the original CD release from the late 80's. Well, I can tell you, if you have that old CD release, this new mastering is definitely worth the price. It's almost like hearing a completely different mix. Incredible improvement compared to the original CD release. And as a nice bonus for those of us that have CD players with HDCD decoding, the CD is encoded with HDCD (though this is not indicated anywhere on the packaging). Frankly, this was never one of my favorite DEVO albums, but I think now it was because the CD sounded so dull and lifeless, almost like I had cotton stuffed in my ears. With the way the new mastering sounds, this just might become my favorite DEVO album. One quibble: I wish they had included "Turn Around", which was the B-side on the "Whip It" 45 single.
I heard a girl in a dress, say her face was a mess. I heard there's no reason why, I heard that now's the time to buy.
I was wondering if I should have purchased the vinyl versions since I already have both albums as MP3s. Freedom Of Choice (Red Vinyl)I was walking home from the train today listening to a DEVO mix on my iPod, knowing I would be receiving my two vinyl reissued DEVO lps any day. Well, they arrived today and I have to say, I am still amazed at what a difference it makes to listen to the vinyl version of a recording over the digital version. I have heard both of these albums over and over since they were originally released, but I have never really heard them like I have today on these new vinyl reissues. The sound is richer, fuller, just a wonderful acoustic experience. And the lp itself is gorgeous, on both of the albums. Both the red and the yellow vinyl are translucent and have a wonderful glow to them. The vinyl is thick and feels a great deal more substantial than the lps I remember from when I was growing up. I am very happy with my purchases. I feel like I am having a completely new experience of music I have been in love with for the last 20 odd years; its a beautiful experience.
DEVO Hit The Mainstream - Shocking!
The days of tunes in 8/13 time are behind them as they streamlined their message for maximum disbursal. This is the DEVO album you might have owned at one time, and it marks the point at which they band actually managed to inject themselves into the mainstream of music, like a mutant virus. Fortunately, they didn't do the same with their lyrics, since the title cut pulls no punches. And all of the tunes here are as hooky as hell; "Whip It," "Gates Of Steel" and the title cut all rock!.
Still fun after all these years!
Devo was an integral part of my high school years. This album still is great to listen to after all these years. The various performances on SNL and of Fridays (the ABC 80's knock off of SNL). The best part is that they are still touring!
A lot of the subliminal sarcasm was lost on my people, especially after "Whip It" made the Top 40.
People should consider their first album "Are We Not Men?"
Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!.
Devo Fix
To me this cd is much better then the "greatest hits" compilation. Blast from the past - as good as I remembered. Whip It Good!.
