Breathes Fire Not only does it recreate the live experience (with excellent sound quality to boot,) but it has a markedly different feel than the previous three World Sinfonia albums. I bought this after just seeing them play in Vegas & listened to it on the way home. Gone is the heavy production that, while creating an incredibly beautiful sound, can border on New Age-y or what some other reviewers have called soporific. Depending on my mood, I remember occasionally having to force myself to listen past this effect to get to the seething intensity below when listening to the three studio albums.
What's left is four awesome musicians playing incredible music together. Al and the accordion player Fausto Beccalossi have great interplay, almost jazz like. The compositions also hold up very well with the more natural sound, perhaps like what would have been heard before the electric age.
Rather than having to deliberately focus my mind, the music on this disc reaches out and brings me in. To put it a different way, listening to the studio albums is experiencing a musical creation, while listening to La Melodia is to hear people creating music. I gotta say both are pretty great.
Fans of Chick Corea will experience a similar contrast between the studio made Ultimate Adventure disc and the Rhumba/Flamenco album or the Live in Barcelona DVD, both recorded live with basically the same band of players as UA. .
