dios best for modern times, of late
dio sounds different than he use to. this was good, i liked it. his approach to singing seems a little different. but this is one of the best he has done in a while. great band, great guitars and drums on this one.
A few great songs save this otherwise mediocre album.
This was obviously a calculated move, and probably a good move as far as most Dio fans are concerned, but unfortunately there just aren't enough good songs to make this a truly classic album. KILLING THE DRAGON is somewhat of a return to the classic (pre-Dehumanizer) Dio formula; you get plenty of fast, intense songs, powerful vocals, typical Dio lyrical content, blazing guitar solos, etc, etc. Fortunately we get three truly great, classic songs: 1) "Killing the Dragon", a nasty slab of classic metal with a great lyrical statement: Dio is back and it's "time to be killing the dragon again!". 2) "Rock and Roll", ranks as one of Dio's best and most classic "slow and heavy" numbers, with great insightful lyrics and a sing-along chorus that is tailor-made for a crowd sing-along in a live setting. 3) "Push", an uncharacteristically pop-metal song for recent Dio material, but great none-the-less, and features one of the only truly well crafted and memorable guitar solos on the album (I'm betting Craig Goldie demoed this solo and Aldritch copied it).
Unfortunately most of the rest of the album is filler. The formula is right, but the songwriting is just not up to par. Also, while guitarist Doug Aldritch has chops for days, shreds all over the place like a demon, and is stylistically similar to Vivian Campbell, his playing just isn't memorable in my opinion. His licks are fast and impressive, but they just don't stick in my head. Vivian Campbell and Craig Goldie always created distinctive melodies within their solos that stuck in my head and elevated the song as a whole; Doug Aldritch's playing just doesn't seem to have that same quality.
This would probably have been a weak three-star album if not for the songs "Killing the Dragon", "Rock and Roll", and "Push". They are all on my list of Dio's "greatest hits". These songs are so good, and I find myself listening to them so often, that they warrant the four-star rating I gave this album. No Dio fan should be without these songs, so don't hesitate to buy KILLING THE DRAGON!.
Best Metal CD in awhile that no one will hear!
BUY IT NOW!. Dio fans must go out and buy this cd to show Ronnie James Dio that he still carries the metal flame! To me this is as good as a metal cd can get and is still refreshing to hear over the garbage that is on the radio today! The band sounds good and looks good in the video for "Push" that is included hear plus the cool looking screensaver.
best metal record is years!
DIO comes threw again like only he can, truly amazing!.
